Well, I don't keep up with this kinda stuff generally, but here's my
guess:
>

Doing psychic network stuff.

Just saw him on Family Ties, playing himself.
> 3. Gary Coleman (Different Strokes)
He does one-shots here and there. Also appears semi-regularly on that WB
sitcom with the two younger Wayan brothers.

Doing movies and tv movies, and plays.

She really did drop out of sight, didn't she?

Still acting. Late of Melrose Place.

Kim is on "In The House" with LL Cool J. Keenan? Not sure. Writing, I
believe and planning a movie. I'll ask my sister...she runs in that
circle.

Not sure.

Didn't she go back to Broadway? She was in that TLC video...

Trying to get her career back in order after being ripped off by her ex.
I just saw her on a talk show and she says Bill Cosby is helping her.
Unfortunately, I was working and wasn't really paying attention to the

I just heard a NYC radio interview with her a couple of weeks ago. She's
still singing at clubs I guess.
I was in New York a few year ago when I caught the most sad story of
Melba Moore applying for Welfare. My reaction was "Oh, no, not Melba
Moore!" but it turned out to be true. She was months behind in her rent,
being threatened with eviction, and without a penny. I think some friends
came to the rescue and bailed her out. What's happened to her since is
anybody's guest, although why she's not landed a gig on one of the black
sit-coms is a mystery. She certainly had the talent, but I suppose there
must have been some drug abuse along the way to bring her to the desperate
state she ended up in. Problem is, too many of these entertainment people
think the gravy train is going to last forever.
Irene Cara was a case of just plain bad management as I understand it. Her
talent was minimal, but what she had was a certain look that was in vogue
at the time. She milked it for what it was worth then fell by the wayside.
And I really am afraid of finding out what she might be doing now to make
ends meet.
Likewise, Jasmine Guy took her mulatto thing as far as it could stretch.
Thing about mulattoes is they began to get on your nerves after while.
They become too distracting.
Lisa Bonet married badly when she hooked up with that Kravitz guy. The
chowderhead was just looking for a stepping stone and she fit the bill. He
really dogged the shit out her and was no doubt the one responsible for her
losing her Cosby gig. Pure selfish egotism on his part, brought her
career to a screeching halt. Last I heard she had taken the kids and
moved in with some yogi somewhere.

His sitcom character is entertaining, in a Three Stooges Kinda Way.
Actually, in person, he's a very gracious, intelligent, funny guy. I'm
happy for his success, which he earned through sheer talent.

Yes. I think he's been on there a couple of times, actually. (In

He was in the O.G. movie a year or so ago. Played the father of Jasmine

and has occasional one-shots here and there. Still looks good although
he's a bit sparse on the top of his head...

I just nabbed this from the LA Times Online, 2/15/97:
[...] Add Benitez: A champion in the junior-welterweight,
welterweight and super-welterweight divisions, he was
one of eight fighters elected to the Boxing Hall of Fame
in his first year of eligibility.
The others were Marvin Hagler, Michael Spinks,
Aaron Pryor, Wilfredo Gomez, Alexis Arguello, Carlos
Zarate and, in the just completed election, Sugar Ray
Leonard.
Leonard, of course, isn't through working on his
legend. He returns to the ring March 1 in Atlantic City,

Darn if he hasn't unretired...again...

Here's yet other missing-in-action folks:
Lloyd Haynes, from "Room 222." And all those other brothers and sisters

Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs, from "Welcome Back, Kotter."
Barbara McNair, singer-actress. Derelict brother was found murdered at
Stanford University a few years back. Used to guest on "I Spy" a lot.

BTW, there were *two* sisters on Laugh-In. The first one went on to
star in Get Christy Love, but opted on getting Christ. The second
sister replaced the first. She was a black version of Goldie, right
down to the short, pixie hairdo. Her name was Chelsea Brown.
After Laugh-In ended, she guest-starred in a few shows, but her career
was short-lived.

Speaking of Kevin Hooks' directing .... The old Mary Tyler Moore
production studio, which created such tv drama as
The White Shadow, Hill St. Blues and St. Elsewhere, gave a few young
Black actors (Kevin Hooks included) their first break in directing.
Thomas Carter, who played "Haywood" on The White Shadow, was the first
one to become a major tv director, working on such shows as Hill
Street Blues and St Elsewhere in the 80's. He now also directs and
produces motion pictures.
Eric Lanueville (sp?) who played the hospital orderly in St Elsewhere
has become a major TV director, too. You'll see his name on the
credits of Chicago Hope, E.R. and others.
I'm proud of the brothers because they recognized the limited
opportunities in front of the camera, and decided to study their craft
and become the best in the business at their chosen profession.
Of course, the payoff is that the dramatic images we see on the tv
screen are now more reflective of our own experiences.

Lloyd Haynes, also an accomplished pilot, committed suicide about 8
years ago. One of the other "kids", the black young woman with the
short Fro, has done commercials, as has the tall white dude with the
red, bushy hairdo. Of course, they're both playing parents now. :-)

Who cares? I caught that ignorant woman on a talk show with the late,
great Dizzy Gillespie, and from nowhere, out of the blue, she began teeing
off on the master with her ignorant "you-can't-tell-me-shit-nigger"
routine. This was many years ago, I was a kid then, but I never will
forget it. I was so angry at how she was talking down to Diz I flipped off
the tv. Also, I think I remember her marrying one of those pretty boys

I know the actress you're talking about, but I'm not sure she played
in Room 222. However, she was featured in Welcome Back Kotter.
Her name is something like Verne'. I think she would have been too
young at the time of 222 to have played a high school kid.

She's doing those Black Quasi-Gospel Musical tours. Y'know the
kind...with the overdrawn Black characters like the minister, the
homosexual, the loud women, etc. She played here in L.A. for a while

This lady was one of the better black comedic actresses around. Mind you,
she played it straight which is generally regarded as more difficult than
zany (Both Abbot and Martin got 60% to Costello and Lewis' 40%). My

He was in Tony, Toni, Toné's "Let's Get Down" video...
True, he couldn't stand not being as popular as he once was - the
ex-cmapion's curse. Now he's fighting Camacho, and no one knows what it's
supposed to achieve other than possibly tarnishing his reputation. If he
wins (which is unlikely), it's "Has-been beats has-been" - no big news.
If he loses, it's "damn, he's * old*"... It's a no-win thing, for it will
surely not regain him a prominent position in boxing or public life...

Hagler has done quite a few B-type action movies, I hear, and lives in
Italy these days, where he's held in high esteem and respect. He still
loks like he could challenge for the title, in fact he looks younger than
in his last couple of years as a boxer. And seems to have been smart with
his $, thanks heavens. Marvelous Marvin remains one of my favorite
fighters, ever. I remember how damn hard I was rooting for him when he
fought Leonard. And to this day I think he was robbed. Leonard was only
show-boating, didn't hurt him at any stage, and in my opinion didn't do
enough to take away the belt from a legendary fighter.
Michael Spinks seems to be doing well financially, but still is rumoured
every once in a while to be back in the gym for a comeback fight in order
to "redeem himself" for the Tyson fight (he cost me a case of beer, I was
sure that he'd outbox Tyson back then, and then he goes down in 90 secs,
causing my friends to ridicule my prediction for ages...). He sure
doesn't seem to be helping his brother Leon too much, who's on welfare
after having been homeless for a while...
Pryor wrote a book ("Flight of the Hawk" or something like that) that
sold quite well last year. He had a short and ill-advised comeback a few
years back, where he had everyone thinking he was an accident waiting to
happen, after his eye surgery, drug problems and all...
Wilfredo Gomez - I hear contradicting reports, maybe because some
journalists confuse him with Wilfred Benitez, who's in pretty sad shape.
I heard Wilfredo had some legal problems (the near-usual drug possession
stuff) but didn't go to jail in the end.
Alexis Arguello - as it seemed everybody was coming back and making some
money, Alexis decided to come back, too. I wathec his fight, and he was
as slow as a comatose sloth. He was outpointed by a club-fighter. Now he
tries to dicover and develop talent in Nicaragua, and I hear the
Nocaraguan government has found some sort of position for him. You must
remember he lost practically all of his ring- earnings due to the
Sandinista revolution. I don't know who on earth talked him into
investing into Niocaraguan assets while a civil war was going on
strong...
Carlos Zarate seems to be doing well, made some low key investments (in
vacation resorts and similar) that allow him to live comfortably.
Wilfred Benitez is a sad case. One of the finest boxers I've ever seen,
and a defensive master who hardly got hit hard, and still now he
vegetates with advanced brain traumas and with not a penny left to his
name. His mother is caring for him. Stuff like this, or the Gerald
McClellan story, or "Gypsy" Harris, or Sam Langford - sometimes make me
abhor pro boxing - it's unbelievable that with all the money the sport
moves promoters or boxing organizations can't invest in a somewhat
reliable pension fund for ex-boxers. These guys should go on strike for a
year or two.

I definitely remember her on Room 222 and the way she used to say "Mr.
Kinkaid." Actually I thought she was a little old to be playing a
highschool student by the time "Welcome Back Kotter" came along, but all
of them were pretty old looking high school students anyway.
Thanks, Paul! I was hoping you would jump in here!

It's a problem. What does a young, vital person, who has spent his or
her life as an elite athlete do after the career is over? Leonard has
little training to do anything other than be a boxer. Plus he does enjoy
the attention...the attention he doesn't seem to understand he can't have
any longer. What is left is just there to lose. Or maintain with
dignity. There are a lot of other athletes in the same spot. What to do
with the next 40-50 years? (I'm glad I chose karate and figure skating
as my sports...I can do these until I drop... literally. Plus I don't
need a partner or opponent or team for either.)

Evidently a benefit is being held for Benitez. The Times story spoke of
his plight and the family's desperate state. I used to follow boxing
much more closely, but stories like this really started getting to me. I
once attended a party at The Champ's (Ali's) home when he lived in L.A.,
and I talked with him at length. His illness hadn't taken hold then, but
observing his behavior, I wondered if I was witnessing the onset of brain
damage. It hurt me so much, I couldn't really get into boxing any
longer. (Turns out my suspicions were right. <sigh>)
A retirement fund would seem to be the very least that should be done for
professional boxers. Enough money is made off of their sacrifices!
Needless to say, I despise Don King and most of the other promoters. I
KNOW some boxing promoters. I still don't like them. They rank
somewhere below attorneys and drug dealers in my estimation.

I think you are getting the two women confused. The woman who played
Will's aunt got pregnant and left the show. Verne played Will's mother.
Fargas is arguably one of the funniest guys ever to grace the silver
screen. His pimp scene from "I'm Gonna Get You Sucka!" is for my money
the most hilarious thing I've ever seen. I've played it back a million
times and still laugh as hard as I did the first time. Then there was his
character from "Across 125th St" . There he takes a bit role and makes it
one of the film's most memorable. And this is precisely what Fargas did so
well -- take minor roles and craft them so they're never forgotten. But,
sadly, what Fargas seemingly couldn't do is just as telling. One look at
his long, weathered face and you know this is a man who's spent a
life-time battling drugs. There can be little question here; you've
seen the same face on the street-corner a thousand times before. And it
stole his grit and soul. Clearly, he played the characters he was
relegated to so well because he was playing himself. "Huggy Bear" was
Antonio Fargas and Antonio Fargas was Huggy Bear. Then when America's
fascination with drug-addled street characters ended, so did his career --
pretty much.
There were a bunch of other actors who never went anywhere for the same
reason. I could name names but is it really necessary? Just look at their
faces, their faces speak volumes.
BTW, the last I heard of Nina Simone was that she had gone out on the
stage so souped-up on scag that she began nodding at the middle of a song.
You remember Nina Simone, the black princess of the 60s?

She DIDN'T leave the show. Get with the program. the first actress
who played the "Aunt Viv" Character got pregnant, had an attack of the
hormones and got fired. Daphne Maxwell Reid took over the role. Verne
Watson ALWAYS played Will's mother.

Wait a minute, let's try to sort this out --"Aunt Viv" is the woman I'm
talking about. She was the stellar actor on the show, the real comedic
genius. Her gift was a superb ability to underplay her role something the
current surplus of black sitcom buffoons can well learn from. Daphne
Mawell Reid is nice but not at all in her class. So, "Aunt Viv" is the
actress I meant. And I'll ignore your remark about hormones because it's
beneath you and I know you really didn't mean to say it.
This woman was such a consummate actress, I'm sure that's why Will Smith
didn't like her. Again, Will is a buffoon. When he plays "Fresh Prince"
he's really playing himself. A clown, really.

I think the fact that it took so long to remember their Names
speaks volumes about what they're doing now. :-)
Actually some Hollywood directors should seek them out
for roles as mothers and other older women. There seems to be
an endless supply of young ms. thangs, and we've got the
waiting-to-exhale age group covered. But just last year we lost a
fine older actress in Rosalind Cash.
(Of course, in a pinch, we could always call on Eddie Murphy :)

Okay, that's fine, but we were talking about Vernee in connection with the
original query of what she was doing currently and one of those things was
playing the role of Will's mother. Then you referred to Vernee as the one
who left the show, but you were in fact talking about another actress
entirely, who played his Aunt. We are just trying to clear up who was
being referred to....

When you say an "attack of the hormones" you mean what, exactly? Was she

The critical difference between the women in question and Rosalind Cash
is (was?) that while Theresa and Chelsea are incredibly beautiful women,
Rosalind could act. In fact, Rosalind had an acting job right up until
her death and was always highly regarded as an actor.
But then, Theresa voluntarily gave up her career...

For those with cable TV, you can check out Carl this coming Sunday

made-for- tv movie called "The Ditchdigger's Daughters". It's
a drama about a hardworking man who struggled to send his
five daughters to medical school.

Sorry, but your glittering generalities must be commented on here. Theresa
Graves was not "incredibly beautiful" nor was she an actress who couldn't
act. Indeed, linking the two descriptors together as you do is usually
misleading in any event. Least ways, this is my opinion. Now, I make the
comment about Theresa Graves' beauty because your opinion of it misses the
whole point of what her character was and why she was chosen to do the
role. I think this distinction is key if only to better able communicate a
modicum of meaningful standards.
In other words, there is a standard we she should strive for even when
talking about subjective things such as "beauty." It makes little sense to
run around calling everybody who every appeared on film an "incredibly
beautiful" actress.
For example, if a Hollywood producer put out a call for an "incredibly
beautiful" black woman, he'd not at all mean Theresa Graves. Judy Pace,
sure, Lena Horn, definitely, but not Theresa Graves. And, please, don't
turn this into a shallow black & white thing, or a useless "beauty is in
the eye of the beholder" soliloquy, I'm talking about the objective
standards people in the industry have come to use over the years;
standards that have spilled over into common use most people recognize and
accept. The more reason why your misuse of the term here screams for
correction.
Theresa Graves was an "incredibly attractive" actress -- stunningly
attractive, and as such infinitely more marketable than someone merely
incredibly beautiful. I would argue that "incredibly attractive" or a
similar term takes in more than just physical beauty. It tells us more,
lets us know that the woman's charms work on many different levels. I
suspect that the producers of the show went through boatloads of
"incredibly beautiful" black women before they found Theresa Graves, and
for this reason if no other, we see how the term "incredibly beautiful"
applied to her fails at once.
As to acting ability this may be more difficult. Was Rosaland Cash a great
actress? I don't think so. Was Theresa Graves great? Most definitely so!
Sure, the role was a shallow one, but you make a typical mistake here --
you think because an actress takes a shallow role she must be a shallow
actress. This is fallacious thinking.
My point exactly, Rich. Without qualification the quote is subject
to a Pandora's Box of interpretation -- none of it good.

From what I remember about the subject, she was starting to complain

She says she doesn't have it anymore, and that the Lord cured her of
it. I don't remember which talk show she was on.
Rudy Ray Moore was a fringe contender black comedian who because or his
blue language and racy themes was something of the official
comedian of black pimps/whores/low-lifes throughout the 60s,
70s, and 80s. Simply put, his humor was filthy with no redeeming value to
speak of. In Moore's world everyone fitted into one of four characters --
pimps, whores, faggots, and tricks. So it was, no matter what joke or poem
he told the punch-line could always be expected to reveal this great truth
about life and people (that all people -- no matter who they are -- fit
into one of these four categories).
Of course, with such a limited repertoire Moore's career was doomed. And
even though there were others like Red Foxx and Pryor who were able to
rise above their humble beginnings, Moore couldn't; mainly because
although he was a somewhat funny guy, his humor was so thoroughly dirty
no amount of washing behind his ear could render him clean enough
for prime time -- the crude had seeminly become too ingrained.
In addition, his material was never original; in fact, it was precisely
the kind of fare black kids have whispered among themselves for ages; the
kind of jokes we called "nasty" when I was coming up -- The "Butt
Sisters," whores that "would make a blind man cum," and that endearing,
old chestnut, "Boy, your mama's pussy is so big..."

The stories I heard at the time was that the first Aunt Viv was very
difficult on the set, very demanding, was given to screaming and shouting
at the other cast members and at the crew, and demanding that she be
given more and better lines. Reportedly, the tension was terrible. Will
Smith, as the star, and Quincy Jones finally had enough and she was
fired. (It's a bad career move to harass the show's star and producer.)
She sued. And you're right...we never did hear how that was resolved.

I saw three Dolemite movies in one night and hated every one of them.
Not only were the premises totally unbelievable but his rap, what he
was supposedly famous for, wasn't funny or entertaining to me.

Man, what a glutton for punishment :)
Rudy Ray Moore was back there in Moms Mabley's day if I'm not mistaken.
And I also remember some weird movie I saw him in. It was worse than
Sweet Back's Bad Ass Song written, directed, acted in, and everything
else by Melvin Van Peebles, Mario's dad. That had been the worst
blaxploitation movie I have ever seen until RRM.
His dialouge was a combination of storytelling and rhime on the one
album I heard by him. It had the Signifying Monkey on it.
I believe the Monkey was in a dilemma:

I'll give you more money than you ever did see.
Money is good while it last,
