You are correct, of course, but the message seems to have resonated
anyway. Too many of us would have it that this bit of conspiratorial
folklore is truly after us with an affirmative hostility. Somehow,
despite the self-interested preoccupations which engage all people, many
insist on conjuring up demons that are not there. To believe that the
powers that be are conscientiously up and at it, at work to divide and
conquer, to keep us down, well...this redounds only to our
disadvantage. Truth may be stranger than fiction, but if the ancillary
damage done by incorporating the latter is simply regarded as one more
piece of received wisdom, guess who suffers.

Studies instructor handed out the speech in class for discussion. I just
thought the wording of the speech a little odd. My main question was why did
he only stipulate 300 years instead of say 600 etc. I was hoping someone
would give me some information I could use to stimulate a discussion
regarding the speech.

I believe the Lynch document does more harm than good. Perhaps Mr. Shew
can tell us whether the African American Studies instructor presented
this document to his students as a true bit of history, which appears to
be the case. I believe that in the year 2001, the real challenges to
the community are not going to be addressed by serving up this kind of
thing to those who may already be predisposed towards paranoia.
Further, it is never a good idea to believe that falsehoods can somehow
serve a greater interest. But even if it were true, why would we want
to incorporate the thinking of a 19th-century bigot into our strategems
for facing the challenges of the modern world? The condition of blacks
in 2001 is light years away from the world of blacks in the "Willie
Lynch" era.
I don't believe the Lynch document typifies the "racist mindset." I
believe it typifies what too many blacks would like to believe the
racist mindset is--all-powerful, all-encompassing, and omnipresent. The
racist mindset, for the most part, consists of what we see right here on
SCAA--weak, insecure, and all too often simply unintelligible.
Because racism is still a reality, it is tempting to try to point to it
as the reason for any and all failure. Folks like Art Clemons have
dedicated their entire lives to this curious weltanschauung, and
promulgate it in nearly every post. All it does is provide cheap solace
for underachievement. How does this help to inspire blacks to overcome
and succeed? The Lynch document essentially informs black youth that
the white power structure is actively at work trying to keep black
people down. This further depresses black kids who have enough
real-life challenges to contend with without dreaming up non-existent
forces of evil.
I find it interesting that polls in recent years demonstrate that young
blacks, by overwhelming majorities, do not consider racism to be the
main obstacle to success.
I was heartened by recent reports that minority applications to the UC
system have gone up tremendously. We were informed by the liberals not
too long ago that Prop 209 (here in California) meant that blacks were
"not wanted" at these universities. It turns out that black (and
Hispanic) youth don't buy into this tendentious nonsense, and are ready
to compete with whites and Asians without the crutch of racial
preferences.
Or the "Willie Lynch" business.

I would imagine the mythological speech encountered unnecessary and
unhelpful limits of imagination. The Russian revolutionary Leon Trotsky,
when confronted with the hard fact that none of his predictions had
actually yet come true, comforted his supporters with the following:
"This is simply further proof of my farsightedness."
Of course, he later ran to Mexico for cover, but wound up with an
ice-pick to the back of his head anyway.

I haven't seen it yet. I'd be interested in your opinion and others
here on SCAA if you have seen it. I saw some mixed reviews that
indicated Burns left out some key artists and truncated the last 40
years into the last hour of the show. But I really enjoyed Burns'
"Civil War" and also "Baseball" and when I get a chance I will be
picking up "Jazz" on DVD so I can watch it according to my own schedule.

The Origin and Development of a Social Being Called "The Negro"
Let us make a slave. What do we Need?
First of all we need a black nigger man, a pregnant nigger woman and
her baby nigger boy.
Second, we will use the same basic principle that we use in breaking
a horse, combined with
some more sustaining factors. We reduce them from their natural
state in nature; whereas
nature provides them with the natural capacity to take care of their
needs and the needs of
their offspring, we break that natural string of independence from

CARDINAL PRINCIPLE FOR MAKING A NEGRO For fear that our future
generations
may not understand the principle of breaking both horses and men, we
lay down the art. For,
if we are to sustain our basic economy we must break both of the
beasts together, the nigger
and the horse. We understand that short range planning in economics
results in periodic
economic chaos, so that, to avoid turmoil in the economy, it
requires us to have breadth and
depth in long range comprehensive planning, articulating both skill
and sharp perception. We
lay down the following principles for lang range comprehensive
economic planning: Both
horse and niggers are no good to the economy in the wild or natural
