Security officials also briefly arrested seven Western
journalists near the rebel
capital and warned they would be expelled from Russia
if ever caught inside
Chechnya again.
Betraying impatience with their progress against an
estimated 2,000 Chechen
fighters defending the ruined capital, Russia's top
commanders threatened late

have so far
used," said General Anatoly Kornukov, head of the
Russian air force.
He added that these weapons could be used to destroy
rebel strongholds in the
mountainous south of the breakaway republic and said
the Chechen fighters

A senior Russian commander apologized to the families of
two young sisters
killed Tuesday when they were crushed by a truck driven
by five drunken
Russian soldiers.
Stanislav Kavun, deputy commander of the interior
ministry troops, said such
incidents inflicted "irreparable damage" on the
reputation of the armed forces,
