I'm trying to figure out the length I need to order my bridal gown in,
as I am ordering it through an internet dress company. The reason I
need to order a special length is because the gown is an A-line and I
would not be able to have it taken it up at the waist. Also, there is
lace and beading at the bottom of the skirt and it would destroy the
look of the dress to alter it at the bottom.

So, for those of you who are familiar with alteration jargon, what does
hollow to hem mean? I believe it means from the hollow of your neck to
the hem of the dress (wearing shoes and a petticoat/slip). Is this
correct? How have other people dealt with this?

Thanks,
Michelle (to John) 6/27/98

Michelle, Hollow to hem measurement is from the base of the neck to the
point where you want the hem to fall with the correct undergarments on.
To find the base of your neck, bend your head forward and feel for the
bump at the back of your neck. That is the base. Hope this helps.

Sounds like you are a perfect canidate for purchasing your gown from a
professional. I can't imagine purchasing a wedding dress mail order and
certainly not from a company that did not explain all the measurements
needed. What if it doesn't look the way you imagined or even worse...it
doesn't fit?
