I have been taking a verbal poll of my family and friends, and have
found conflicting results. My parents have used my mom's maiden name
initials, while my fiance's dad and his new wife have used her married
name initials. Which is the correct way? We get our rings before the
minister pronounces us "man and wife." Saturday is our day to go look
at wedding bands, and I would like to have an idea before we talk to
the jeweler.

Working for a jeweler, I have seen a LOT of engraving options, but I have
never seen the maiden-name initial used except when the bride was NOT
changing her name... These are WEDDING BANDS -- symbolizing your MARRIAGE
-- and if you are changing your name, then IMO the engraving should
reflect that (if you decide to go with the traditional BBB GGG date
engraving) -- I, personally, like the ones where she writes "To Groom, Love
Bride date" in his and he writes "To Bride, Love Groom date" in hers --
using names or nicknames... or ones where people write something
meaningful from their shared history... We haven't decided yet...

Why do you have to engrave initials at all? Andy and I engraved a special
message to each other, and our wedding date. You could even surprise each
other by you picking his engraving, and him picking yours.

I don't think it is a matter of what is correct, but what you prefer. I
haven't engraved my engagement ring yet, but it will be my maiden name
initials and maybe the date of our engagement. I won't be able to engrave
my wedding band (it will be a band consisting of sapphires channeled set
around the entire band), but my fiance's band will have our first names
and wedding date.

Hope this helps,
Natasha

Hmmm . . . I looked at it differently. I had Mark's ring engraved using
my current initials, even though I am changing my name after we're married
(it reads "JKZ to MDB 9-7-96"). The ring does symbolize our marriage, but
to me symbolizes the fact that JKZ (not JKB) married MDB on that date. I
thought it lent a better sense of "history" to the ring.

As an aside, my main concern was that Zimmerman is the last name of my
first husband, and thus my initials in the ring would include his name in
some way (as opposed to my maiden name initial). But, as the woman at
Tiffany who helped me with this pointed out, it is the name I had when I
met Mark and the name I'll have up until we're married -- regardless of
how I acquired it, it is currently MY name.

Anyway, my 2 cents . . .

Yes... we do it all the time at our store... we usually do 3 initals, an
&, 3 initials and an 8 space date 00/00/00 -- or something else with that
number of spaces/digits/letters... JAJ & KPJ 3/8/97
