My fiance and I are looking into having tree seedlings as our wedding
favours. The only problem is - what do you do for guests who live in an
apartment and have no place to plant a tree?
Has anyone used these? How did you solve that problem? Did delivery go o.k.?

For my shower favors, my mom and sister/MOH potted a whole bunch of baby ivy
plants. Everyone seemed to like those (unless they were just being polite).
Since it is a houseplant, there is no issue for those who have no outdoor
space to plant in. Even though I have a house with a yard, I have to say I
probably would not want to plant a seedling. If anything my yard may have
a tree too many at this point. You may want to consider something a little
smaller than a tree as a favor. Maybe young azaleas, since those can stay
potted for a long time or (if you get a hardy variety) can be planted
outdoors.

Hi Kathie,
I've having something similar for wedding favors but not so ambitious as
yours. I've painted mini terra cotta pots (2 inches) with various designs
and am planting nasturtiums because they are easier to grow and are quite
hardly.
I would say there are a few things that you need to consider having tree
seedling favors. One, you have to make it easy to people to keep and
almost hassle free to maintain. If it's alot of work, like the other
posters said, the seedlings will probably be neglected and thrown out.
Second, some people may not have a big yard to grow something like this.
What if they lived in an apartment? Thirdly, you should ask yourself,
would you be okay if 30 of these favors left over at your wedding? One big
reason why people don't have favors is that they feel favors are a waste of
money for something that people don't keep. So if you don't mind having a
bunch of these left over (which will be possible) then go ahead.
I think the idea is nice but may not be entirely practical. Seems alot of
work for what it's worth. You may want to spend time thinking about other
things rather than worrying whether your seedlings will arrive in good
shape. Just my thoughts

As for the "choice" tree to use for the guests that do have a house, I would
say to use Red Maple. Those trees are the ones that turn that very
beautiful, bright, orange/red during the fall. They also grow in just about
any climate, and almost any soil. So if you have anyone from
out-of-town...you won't need to worry about whether or not it will grow
where they live. They also survive some of the harshest conditions, and most
common diseases.
There is only one problem....it can't be planted if the ground if frozen.
But that doesn't happen too often. If the ground is covered in snow, but not
frozen..it can still be planted. If you are having a summer or spring
wedding, then these trees make the PERFECT favour seedlings!

Browsing the web one day I found a site that deals with something similar to
what you want to do. My fiancé john and I have decided (august 99) to give
out seed favors- a little packet of flower seeds- that our guests can plant.
It's also relatively cheap so if they decide not to plant them, I'm not too
concerned! But the best thing I liked about this favor is the quote- "Thank
you for sharing this special day. Please plant these seeds to commemorate
our new beginning." I think it means so much to have a meaningful favor.
: )
The site's address is http://www.tfbeginnings.com. but I think I'm gonna
try to make my own. I found a place in Baltimore that sells bulk seeds (not
too expensive!) and then I'll get some paper samples and print it all out on
the computer.
Hope this helps!

My uncle and aunt gave tree seedlings as wedding favors and in my honest
opinion they were a complete waste of time and money.
We received at least 5 of them and not one of them survived. I was actually
looking at one that my uncle had planted over 2 years ago and it is still
tiny. But I guess to each his own when it comes to their choice in wedding
favours =)

I think they will make a unique favor, with a nice environmental flair.
