This magazine bills itself as a magazine for interracial couples, familes, and
people. It's much like any ohter theme magazine in format. Letters, news,
questions and answers, advertisements, etc. dealing with interracial issues.
They accept submissions of just about anything with an interracial theme. Now,
I know there has been some discussion over the differences between terms
interracial and intercultural, and this magazine is geared towards it's title.
I don't know if it's the number of people who submit articles or how the
topics are picked, but a lot of the mag seems to deal with Black and White
couples. However this is just my opinion. Also, the mag states that the Feb.
1994 issue will focus on Asian/White relations. So, the focus seems to
vary. I must also add that I've only read 3 issue of Interrace myself so I
cannot really comment on what the magazine is about.
For those of you in the San Francisco Bay Area and the Santa Cruz Area, I have
a few places you can find this magazine. In the SF Bay Area, Barnes and Noble
carries this magazine. For those of you in Oakland in particular, it is also
at Delaurents Newsstand near the downtown BART stations. In Santa Cruz, I
have found Interrace at the Bookshop Santa Cruz which is located downtown on
Front street.
Biracial Child
c/o Interrace
P.O. Box 12048
Atlanta, Georgia 30355
(404) 364-9690
1 year (4 quarterly issues) $20. Canada, US$24; Foreign US$32
The first 500 subscribers will receive a second year of
Biracial Child for free! :) As this magazine is about children ages 0-17
years old, I think this is a good opportunity to encourage any budding writers
you parents may have to write in. I've noticed letters from young adults in
Interrace and I feel that they are looking to hear from others of mixed
heritage too. As for the older crowd, I think your submissions would be just
as helpful. You know, sharing how you dealt with being of mixed heritage while
growing up and stuff like that.
This is a new magazine that is coming in December. Looking at the ad, this
is what to expect.
Hair care tips, parenting forum, professional advice, health kid care,
ethnic recipes, an age-by-age guide to your child's multiracial
development, strategies for building positive self-esteem/identity,
and a lot more! :)
Yikes! This is getting really long. I have one more magazine that a fellow
poster sent me. This is the info taken straight from that mailing.
Here is another interracial publication:
Author: New people (Oak Park, Mich.)
Title: New people.
Publication Info: Oak Park, Mich. : Walker-Hollis Pub.
Publication Info: Began in Sept. 1990.
Phys. Description: v.
The Editor is Yvette Walker Hollis and she is listed in the Oak Park, michigan
phone book, I am not sure as to whetther the magazine is also listed.
The January issue of Essence magazine had a brief article listing the
above as well as another periodical, Interracial Classified.
Once again, if you have any other magazine you think people would be
interested, mail me and I'll stick that information in this file. I'd
appreciate just how much information about the publication you find essential.
This is long file as it is and I hope to make a shorter to put in this groups
FAQ. All comments appreciated! Once again, I apologise to those that I have
yet to repond to.

Could you elaborate on your disappointment perhaps?
I have seen their first issue, which was rather dull...droning
on about Black-white relationships.
>Karen
I agree. It's not well-edited, and is very low budget.
I suspect that they run articles exactly as submitted. There's no sense
of style -- a set way of referring to biracial people, for example. Some
articles have a scholarly tone, while others have an informal one. I've
often found grammatical errors and incoherent sentences.
As for Biracial Child, yes, it's edited, as well as published, by the same
people. There may be a wider audience for this magazine, so perhaps, they
can hire experienced staff.

I find that Interrace Magazine is great. I live in Maine, which
is hardly known for its cultural diversity, and I welcome the
chance to read about the experiences of other interracial
couples in other parts of the country, especially since the
chances are good that my fiance and I will be living somewhere
besides Maine within a few more years. Are there other
magazines which focus on interracial issues?

There is another magazine called New People (someone posted the address here in
the last week or two.) Anyone complaining about "amateurishness" of Interrace
will find New People hopeless. We have been getting it for about a year and will
not renew due to Interrace, which seems extremely professional and informative by
comparison.
I agree with your comments on Interrace, I like it a lot, and this is for a
community, not advertiser acceptance, which greatly changes the need for a "slick"
and "better" magazine. I occasionally find it a little low on content.\
