Applications
------------
The COMAS Graduate School offers postgraduate education in four
doctoral programmes:
· Software and Computational Engineering
· Information Systems
· Scientific Computing
· Statistics
The COMAS doctoral programmes aim at completion of the Ph.D.
degree in 4-5 years (depending on the base education).
The base education required for entering the programmes is a
Bachelor's degree (equivalent to 120 credit units) or a
Master's degree (equivalent to 160 credit units). The field
of the basic degree should be appropriate to the succesful
completion of postgraduate studies in the chosen COMAS
programme, i.e. information systems, computer science,
statistics, mathematics, or a related field.
!! Closing date for applications is September 30, 1999 !!
The application should include the following documents. The
documents may be submitted in English, Finnish, or Swedish.
An English translation must be appended to documents in
other languages.
· Application form
· Official copies of all relevant diplomas
· For applicants not holding a Finnish Bachelor's or
Master's degree: a copy of the GRE in Computer
Science or a related field (Mathematics, Statistics,
Economics)
· For foreign applicants: copies of certificates of
tests on English (TOEFL) and Mathematics (GMAT)
· Curriculum Vitae
· Brief description of your motivation of study in
COMAS and in a particular programme (accompanying
a research plan or a specification of research topics
of interest)
· Two letters of reference (including contact
information)
Application forms are available via WWW in both HTML and
PostScript formats. They can also be obtained on request,
by e-mail or by post, from the COMAS office (address below).
The applications should be returned to the COMAS office.
Candidates will be personally informed of the admittance to
COMAS within two months after the closing date of the
application period. Applications will not be returned.
Financial Aid
-------------
COMAS students are encouraged to have their own funding. For
a limited number of students, funding can be provided by
COMAS. The amount of financial support, after taxes, is
about 6000 FIM (1000 EUR/1200 USD) per month. COMAS funding
is granted on an annual basis. For students demonstrating
required progress, the funding can be extended for up to
four years.
COMAS may arrange also other types of financial support e.g.
research assistantships granted by the Academy of Finland.
In later phases of their studies COMAS students typically have
funding for their research work via employment in research
projects with outside funding, or via teaching/research posts
at the participating departments. The applications for special
funding will be announced based on availability.
Tuition at Finnish universities is free. The students can
arrange their housing through the Kortepohja Student Village or
the KOAS organization. They are advised to enroll in the
student union (about 500 Fmk a year, includes health care).
Foreign students can contact Elina Isannainen (Foreign
Student Adviser, University of Jyvaskyla, E-mail:
isan...@halko.jyu.fi) for general information about the
University of Jyvaskyla.
