I'm glad to NOT see Whoopi Goldberg and Goldie Hawn among the hot tickets
this year. I could never understand why American U. invited Goldie Hawn to
speak at commencement last year when she dropped out of college very early
and became -- an actress. Of what benefit could she be as a role model for
college graduates? And Whoopi Goldberg was Wellesley's choice last year! I
would have been ashamed (though maybe entertained) had I been a graduate or
a parent at those schools.
I am also sorry to see I have missed Bill Clinton speaking at Syracuse. My
Syracuse grad was in the class of 1997 (whose speaker I can no longer
remember). I get to hear Madeleine Albright at Smith next month and for
that I am grateful.
I'm not a big Whoopi or Goldie fan, but I'd love to see someone like
Jerry Seinfeld or David Chapelle at a graduation speech. I could
imagine David being especially funny.
You're not going to get any real motivation out of the speech, but
it's a last chance to have a good time with some people you'll never
see again.

Reed has a tradition of always having alums as speakers, i don't know
why other schools don't do the same- surely if it is a good school
they have someone who is articulate and charming, plus alums know all
the quirks of a school that make a speech meaningful to students
Congratulations on '97 and '03.
I hope I don't have to hear Slick Willy.
Whoopi, Goldie or Madeleine is a real toss up. The first two are, thank God,
not politicians.

After spending $160,000 to see my daughter graduate, I do not need to be
entertained and neither does she.
Smith students choose their commencement speaker and Albright was their
number one choice this year. I have no complaints -- as long as she doesn't
sing the Bush line.
Lori
If you hum a few bars, I'll try to fake it. :-)
Madeleine Albright was one of my sisters professors at Georgetown University
(Foreign Service - graduate school) way back when. She loved her. I bet she
turns out to be an awesome speaker...she was a professor, you know. Byer

I'm curious, what are you looking to get out of the $160,000 you
spent? Realistically...

A kid who remembers her college graduation as a pivotal event in her life.
I've already come to terms with the fact that, as a double major in Studio
Art and Sociology, she is not going to be able to support me in the manner
to which I would like to become accustomed. Nor herself. She has said her
passion is social justice, especially disadvantaged youth, and she believes
one must follow one's passion to have a successful (not necessarily
financially successful) life. Who knows.

Dennis Ross is ambassador to which country? Is it the Dennis Ross from the
previous two administrations?
Naomi Wolf is the only other name which I recognize.
Who are these people?
