Dear all,

Quite a long bulletin this week - i'll be working the next two Sundays so there might not be any bulletins / society emails for the next couple of weeks! I'll need some time some out, clearly. ;)

If there are any more volunteers for our fundraiser at SOAS this coming Friday, please email me back!

Time: 18:30 - 20:00

Gulshan-i Raz  ("Rose Garden of Mystery") holds a unique position in Persian Sufi literature. Written in c. 1317 by Mahmoud Shabistari (d. c. 1339), less than one hundred years after the deaths of Attar, Ibn ali-‘Arabi and Rumi, it take the form of answers and questions put to him by a fellow mystic. The questions raise metaphysical enigmas and controversies that were at the heart of spiritual enquiry of that time and still have relevance today.

Persian Documents from pre-Mongol Bāmiyān

Date: Tuesday, 28 November
Time: 18:00 - 19:30
Location: Room 2.3, Aga Khan University, 210 Euston Road, London NW1 2DA

FB: https://www.facebook.com/events/540282596315893/

Several years ago, a trove of manuscripts was discovered in central Afghanistan, part of which explicitly dated to the early 5th/11th century and to the several decades before the Mongol invasion of Iran (early 7th/13th century). This trove is quite diverse and contains texts of different genres (legal documents, letters, ledgers, poetry, prose, exegesis, etc.) written in six languages (Persian, Judeo-Persian, Arabic, Judeo-Arabic, Hebrew and Aramaic). Despite the range in genre, date and language, it seems that most of these texts originate in the Bāmiyān valley, making them a unique source for the history of this area and its adjacent regions during the pre-Mongol period.

Ajam is a London based band that formed in early 2010. Ajam's music tries to bring the epic and soulful spirit of the native music of Iran to a new generation. The band's repertoire comprises of original pieces that are set to a post-modern soundscape of traditional, rural and tribal instruments fused with urban and rock beats and bass lines and production sensibilities. Ajam's performance style is inspired by different elements of Iranian 'people's' music such as street and market place performances, music related to traditional sports and competitions, religious passion-plays and ritualistic performances and recitals.

The vocal performance mirrors this vibrant sonic blend by presenting a mixture of roots styles such as the once popular 'Bahr-e-Taveel' and other traditional/folk singing styles with hints of modern inspiration. All this is delivered in a dynamic performance, which incorporates elements of dance and movement.

Ajam is a cultural experience of Iranian Roots Music.
