Dear all,

The final two Yarshater Lectures in Persian Art at SOAS will take place this week, see:
https://www.facebook.com/events/1235013889914849/

In Iranian/Persian culture there are a few popular 'Winter festivals and traditions' that are derived from Zoroastrianism, although today they have largely cultural significance rather than spiritual ones for the majority of Iranians who mark them. These are Shab-e Yalda (celebrated on the eve of the Winter Solstice) Jashn-e Sadeh (celebrated at the end of January) and Chaharshanbe Suri (celebrated on the last Tuesday evening before the Spring Equinox, which marks Norouz - the Persian New Year).

I mention these as there is a conference call for papers (see below) taking place at Oxford University in March. Since Persian festivals and celebrations are an area often overlooked in Iranian studies, I would encourage anyone that has sufficient knowledge on the history, mythology, development and contemporary features, practices and rituals (both secular and religious) of Iranian and Zoroastrian winter traditions to make a paper submission. Not only is this a topic overlooked in Iranian studies, but these are traditions that I would guess are mostly unknown outside of Iran and the Iranian diaspora.

Call for Papers: Winter Festivals and Traditions, Oxford University- 25 March 2017

Deadline: Tuesday, 07 February

The Institute of Social and Cultural Anthropology (ISCA) at Oxford University will be hosting a one-day conference on Saturday 25 March 2017. The conference will focus on ‘Winter Festivals and Traditions’ as part of a larger research discussion on ritual, religion and secularism in modern-day Europe. We invite participants with disciplines in anthropology, religious studies, cultural studies, folklore and similar professions. Topics for submission are not restricted to Europe, but can focus on traditions worldwide.
