Dear all,

Moon gazers, there is some hype building out there for tomorrow's 'Super Moon' - they say the Moon hasnt been this close to the Earth in almost 70 years, and wont be again for a couple of decades. And then, of course, there is the British weather forecast to throw a wrench down - clouds.. all day and night. I know what you're thinking... '..SOAS!'. ;}

On a different note, it has come to our attention that some students have been approached at SOAS by an outside group regarding an upcoming demonstration. Activism and awareness on human rights issues is legit and should be encouraged. However, there are many front groups in the Iranian diaspora, and so i feel that i should warn students here not to involve themselves with unverifiable activist groups taking on issues to do with Iran so as not to risk being taken advantage of or end up on somebody else's watch list. Unless you can be sure that you are dealing with trusted, credible and verifiable charities or human rights organisations, i do not recommend giving money, aid or other help to groups that you do not actually know or who's background cannot be vouched for.

What is Iranian or Turkish, Arab or Armenian cuisines? These are labels which acquire importance on the global stage, with the modern acceleration of interest in food, becoming a spectacle and a recreation, with wide cultural and commercial consequences. The presentation will follow histories, geographies and vocabularies of food in the regions of Anatolia, Iran and the Arab Levant, to show that food cultures and innovations owe much to geography and communication, less to ethnicity and nationality.

Tehran is a city both forged and forgotten by modernity. The ever-present hum of traffic, the continuous movement of people, the breathing of heavy, combusted air. Not only the mobile vehicles, but solidified infrastructures, pavements, highway exits, footbridges and construction sites – as well as the human adaptations and appropriations of space around them – seem to find varied, intermixed, negotiated ways of co-existence. In the mixture, the Chaloos Road, an engineering triumph, a motorway carved through the mountains escaping out of Tehran to the Caspian Sea, turns into an umbilical extension of urban life. Extracted from the earth itself, bitumen is rolled everywhere as the surface for modernity, offered as crude cure for the city’s mobility.

British Iranian Medical Association - BIMA

Every year BIMA (along with other organisations) collaborates with Rustam School to organise mentoring events for children hoping to go to university. Our aim is to promote other subjects and also show them the path to university.

This year the event is being held at SOAS on Saturday 21st of January 2017

In order to have a successful event we need speakers to guide students about the application process, personal statements etc.

We are still short of a few speakers both (undergraduate and postgraduate) for the following subjects:

Journalism - Banking/Finance - Management - Art - Architecture - Teaching - Media/Film - Marketing -Sports

If you are interested or know anyone that would be of help then please leave a message. Ideally postgraduates should be recently graduated as children generally find it easier to build a rapport with those closer to their age.

We would really appreciate your help but this is for the children not for us!!
