Once again, many apologies for the late notice. There's no particular format but we wont be doing awkward presentations or asking people to sit around and have to introduce themselves to everyone. We'll be providing Iranian tea and sweets and the occasion is just an informal gathering for all of you to come in and out as you like and mingle with other SOASians who share either a connection or interest in Iran and Iranian culture!

While the historic 2015 nuclear agreement removed a barrier to dialogue between Iran and the West, it further strained relations between Iran and its GCC neighbours. The six states of the GCC were afraid that an agreement would bolster Iranian regional expansionist efforts. And today, they see Iran's forays in Syria, Iraq and Yemen as exactly that. What are Iran's goals in the region? And can Iran and the GCC capitals overcome their differences?

FB: https://www.facebook.com/events/1443024959048244/Can you speak and write in Persian? If so, you are invited to participate in: Sexuality, Gender, Women and Feminism in Iran Reading Group
Who we are: This is a Persian-English bilingual reading group for scholars and activists with a focus on gender, sexuality, women and feminism in the context of Iran and its diasporas. All participants have experience in either activism or academia, and we set up this reading group in early 2016 to focus on these issues of interest; we also pay particular attention to knowledge produced in Persian and for a broader audience. These are friendly and informal gatherings that aim to bring together a wide range of scholars and activists from different disciplines.
What we read: This is a source-based reading group and the texts we read are decided by the group itself. We wish to explore a wide range of materials including scholarly books and articles, pamphlets, novels and other pertinent written sources. In our first round of meetings, which concluded in August 2016, we read Women with Mustaches and Men without Beards: Gender and Sexual Anxieties of Iranian Modernity by Afsaneh Najmabadi. Our reviews and analysis of this will be finalised soon and shared with participants.
Our aim: As an outcome of our meetings, we would like to produce reviews. We envision that each session will consist of a kind of ‘team’ review of a book, collection of articles, documents or other work. We review sources that belong to either academic disciplines or activists’ efforts.
Requirements: We read both English and Persian sources. While the primary language of our meetings is Persian, we do use English when discussing English material. The written result of our discussions will also be in both Persian and English. Hence, fluency and academic literacy in both Persian and English is a prerequisite. The meetings take place once a month.

My advice, go outside, and take a long walk in a quiet place under the Full Moon tonight. You wont see it like this often.
