Literary Awards in Iran - A Tool for the Control of CultureDate: Wednesday, 14 December
Time: 18:00 - 20:00
Room: T102, SOAS Language Centre, 22 Russell Square
Speaker: Alireza Abiz
Literary awards in Iran can be divided into two main categories: private and state-sponsored. Private awards are of little financial value and are usually short-lived and face numerous challenges. State-sponsored awards are major financial incentives and act as a major tool for promotion of pro-regime literature. Independent or dissident literature has no share in such awards. In spite of the financial value of state-sponsored awards, they are not popular with the literati. Good or bad, association with any cultural project sponsored by government undermines the integrity of independent writers and damages their social influence among some groups especially the young idealist readers. The government knows this and tries to use it to their advantage. In his talk, Alireza Abiz will discuss both categories of literary awards in present-day Iran and how they function within the framework of cultural policies of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
