Dear all,

Like the nights these days, a long one this week. I'll repeat some of the below if i can put a bulletin together next Sunday - although there might not be one because of the Idea of Iran conference at SOAS next weekend.

And with regret, i was unable to find any arak / aragh saggi on sale after trying several different Iranian shops yesterday. So no Persian liquor on Tuesday.

Sohrab Shahid Saless: Exiles

Dates: 04 November 2017 - 19 January 2018

Full programme: https://www.goethe.de/resources/files/pdf136/sohrab-shahid-brochure-2017.pdf

The visionary filmmaker Sohrab Shahid Saless (1944-1998) was one of the great exiles of World Cinema. A seminal figure of the Iranian New Wave, Shahid Saless moved to West Germany in the mid-1970s, where this self-described “guest worker” created an unparalleled body of works for cinema and television: In meditative but searing images of everyday life, his slow-paced films tell simple stories that speak forcefully to the traumas of homelessness and displacement. They are more urgent than ever today.

Persia and the Persian Question

Date: Wednesday, 29 November
Time: 18:00 - 20:00
Location: British Academy, 10 Carlton House Terrace, London SW1Y 5AH

Speaker: Ali Ansari

This lecture will look at the ways in which the study of the history, language and culture of Iran and the wider Persianate world has developed in recent years, assessing the areas of growth and interest before looking specifically at questions of methodology and historiography. It will ask how these have affected our understanding of Iran’s past, and its implications for our appreciation of the present, using as a case study, our understanding of British-Iranian relations. Turning specifically to Orientalism and its malcontents, the presentation will look at key writers – including the British statesman, George Nathaniel Curzon – to show how enthusiasm for methodological rigour can lean dangerously towards ideological closure and that the analysis of text without sufficient context tilts the balance inexorably away from history towards mythology.

Panel Discussion: ‘The Garden of Mystery’ by Shabistari and the Influence of Sufism in Contemporary Visual Arts

Date: Tuesday, 28 November
Time: 18:30 - 20:00
Location: Asia House, 63 New Cavendish Street, London W1G 7LP

Panellists: Dr Ladan Akbarnia, Curator, Dr Sussan Babaie, Andrew W. Mellon, Dr Leonard Lewisohn and Dr Taha Afshar. Introduced by Mariam Neza.

Gulshan-i Raz  ("Rose Garden of Mystery") holds a unique position in Persian Sufi literature. Written in c. 1317 by Mahmoud Shabistari (d. c. 1339), less than one hundred years after the deaths of Attar, Ibn ali-‘Arabi and Rumi, it take the form of answers and questions put to him by a fellow mystic. The questions raise metaphysical enigmas and controversies that were at the heart of spiritual enquiry of that time and still have relevance today.
