Dear all,

A big and warm but belated welcome to you all for the new SOAS academic year, 2016-17! No doubt you already know that if Iran is 'your thing', or just the Middle East in general, then you've picked the right place to study or work at SOAS! - so i dont need to plug anything more to you about that, ;)

For those of you who are new to SOAS
there's a one word expression which many old-timers here use that goes something like this: "SOAS" - this basically means something has gone wrong, not to plan, or you dont want to take responsibility (either partially or fully) for something unforeseen. So we shrug our shoulders and just say, "SOAS.." - which will become self-explanatory to you over time. ;}

^^ So, on that note but in a more serious way, until recently there had been another campus called Vernon Square which is close to the SOAS halls of residence in Kings Cross. This campus closed during summer, and a new SOAS 'block' was opened in Senate House as a replacement. However, with the closing of Vernon Square and rooms in Senate House apparently being used by some other UofL affiliated colleges in the afternoons, getting a room booking on campus has become much more difficult this year (that might also have something do with the SOAS Centenary celebrations). So i apologize that we have not yet been able to arrange a 'meet & greet' for you yet, this is due to the lack of rooms that are available at a reasonable time - "SOAS!". But i have put in another request for Monday, 17 October so will keep you updated about that!

That all aside, thank you all for joining-up at the Freshers Fair or by email! If you are on this email list by mistake and cant see any unsubscribe link let me know and i will take you off the list. Believe it or not some handwriting out there is actually even worse than mine! So i had a little difficulty reading some student numbers - either that, i could just be insane for no longer being able to read numbers correctly. You are free to take your pick for an explanation if you've ended up on this list by mistake, ;} Or it could just be another case of, "..SOAS".

I'll be doing a bulletin like the one below either weekly or fortnightly (usually on a Sunday) listing certain events, news, job offers etc in and around SOAS that are relevant to Iranian studies and student activity. So i hope you'll find these useful! If you need to refer back to these emails after deleting them, you can also find them all here:

Speaker: Beatrice Campi (Master Graduate in History of Art and Archaeology at SOAS)

An often discarded topic, Safavid jewellery to this day keeps puzzling  many Safavid and Iranian art experts. Does such a thing as Safavid jewellery exist? And if so, why did this production not share the same fame of Ottoman and Mughal jewellery, given that the Islamic Gunpowder Empires ruled concurrently over the Islamic territories and must have clearly been exchanging goods and diplomatic gifts among each other? This talk will try to unravel some of these questions and will mostly focus on the origins of the Safavid jewellery tradition.

Nazi Paikidze, an American chess master, is boycotting the Women's World Chess Championship in Tehran over the requirement that she would have to wear a hejab while in Iran against her will. For some differing viewpoints and reactions to this story see the below links:
