Since the 1979 Revolution, Iranian politics has conventionally been viewed as a polarized conflict between ‘secular’ and ‘Islamic’ ideologies. I argue that this view has masked the real battle, which has been between despotism and patriarchy, on the one hand, and democracy and gender equality, on the other. The century-old struggle for democracy in Iran has been enmeshed in the dynamics of sexuality, theology and politics. In this light I re-examine the course of the 2009 presidential elections and their aftermath, exploring the shifting meanings of namus and haqq in Iranian political culture.

Revisiting Rouhani's Election: The politics of managing change in IranDate: Thursday, 10 November
Time: 16:30 - 18:00
Location: Room 9.04, 9th Floor, Tower 2, 2 Clement's Inn, Mobil Court, London School of Economics, London WC2A 2AZ
Speaker: Ali Ansari
The election of Hassan Rouhani to the Presidency of the Islamic Republic in 2013 for many signalled a popular rejection of the politics of confrontation endorsed by his predecessor Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, and support for greater liberalism at home and internationalism abroad. With his first term coming to an end and an agreement reached on Iran's nuclear programme, this talk revisits the 2013 Presidential election campaign and argues that the process retained much of the intricate management of previous elections and a willingness to 'believe the rhetoric' of the campaign has resulted in a dangerous mismanagement of expectations.

Iranian Architects and Architecture: Transition from Traditional to PostmodernDate: Saturday, 12 November
Time: 09:00 - 17:00
Location: Asia House, 63 New Cavendish Street, London W1G 7LP
The main focus of this conference is to look at the evolution of 20th century architecture in Iran, concentrating on the transition from traditional to postmodern architecture.
On the whole, there has been limited research on the evolutionary aspects of the 20th century post-Qajar architecture of Iran. The essential difference between the development of modern architecture in Europe and Iran is that in Europe architecture was evolutionary encompassing several centuries and accompanied by new technologies, whereas in Iran it leaped from traditional to modern in less than a century.
The purpose of the conference is to discuss and evaluate the overall shortcomings and successes of modern architecture in Iran, as well as recognize the achievements of Iranian architects and the works they have created.
