Lecture by Shiva Rahbaran on her book Iranian Cinema Uncensored: Contemporary Film-Makers Since the Islamic Revolution (I.B.Tauris, 2016). The New Iranian Cinema is considered by many to be the most fascinating cultural phenomenon produced within the Islamic Republic of Iran. Containing twelve first-hand interviews with the most renowned film-makers living and working in contemporary Iran, Rahbaran's book provides insights into film-making within a society often at odds with its rulers. Through these conversations Rahbaran reveals that the seeds of the New Iranian Cinema were sown long before the revolution, and that Iranian film-makers gave rise to a cinema which became a global phenomenon despite censorship, sanctions and political isolation.

Iran-US relations and the future of the JCPOA under the new Amercian PresidentDate: Wednesday, 07 December
Time: 18:00 - 20:00
Room: T102, SOAS Language Centre (22 Russell Square)
FB: https://www.facebook.com/events/998372910286138/* Please note that seating is very limited and will be on a first-come first-serve basis. It is almost a year since the implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). What has changed? And is it all about to be un-done? Advocates of the nuclear agreement argued that limiting Iran’s nuclear capabilities and integrating it into the global economy would make the region safer and over time alter the regime’s behaviour. According to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Iran has largely adhered to the agreement’s terms constraining its nuclear program. Yet, outside of the nuclear sphere, Iranian actions in a range of regional contexts deepens concern that it is merely using the JCPOA to reap economic benefits while adhering to disruptive foreign and security policies. Meanwhile, many Iranians charge that the unwillingness of the United States to loosen banking restrictions and other non-nuclear sanctions undermines the spirit of the JCPOA and ultimately threatens the agreement. Unmet expectations on both sides raise serious questions about the agreement’s future. And the soon to be President Trump has vowed to rip up the agreement when he takes over the US presidency. So what will become of the deal and the future of Iran-US relation?

The Law Journal is a student-run publishing body, focusing on promoting the research of students, both undergraduate and graduate, researchers, and scholars at the School of Oriental and African Studies. We focus on publishing articles that challenge norms and categorical truths, contributing to the legal sector, and those in its vicinity, and facilitating dialogues between students, faculty members, and the wider world.
