Dear all,

So, when time creeps and catches up on you, the SOAS academic year 2016-17 is practically over. I dont know, is that a good, or a bad thing? You tell me. ;}

On the Iranian calendar 13 Bedar is the 13th day after Norooz (13th of Farvardin) and is traditionally a day for people to spend time outdoors in nature and green spaces to ward off bad luck and symbolically mark the end of the Persian New Year celebrations (throwing away their sabzeh from the Haft Seen into flowing water etc) and just enjoy their day outdoors.

This year 13 Bedar falls on Sunday, 02 April. So wishing you all a Happy 13 Bedar and end to the Persian New Year celebrations in advance!

Below you'll find events throughout April and into May.

Book Launch: Transnationalism in Iranian Political Thought: The Life and Times of Ahmad Fardid

Date: Thursday, 27 April
Time: 19:00
Room: Khalili Lecture Theatre (KLT)

FB: https://www.facebook.com/events/281376718960519/

Speaker: Ali Mirsepassi (New York University)

During the Iranian Revolution of 1978/9, the influence of public intellectuals was widespread. Many espoused a vision of Iran freed from the influences of 'Westtoxification', inspired by Heideggerian concepts of anti-Western nativism. By following the intellectual journey of the Iranian philosopher Ahmad Fardid, Ali Mirsepassi offers in his book Transnationalism in Iranian Political Thought: The Life and Times of Ahmad Fardid (Cambridge University Press, 2017) an account of the rise of political Islam in modern Iran.

The documentary film, The Fabulous Life and Thought of Ahmad Fardid, is based on Mirsepassi’s book about Ahmad Fardid and it is made by Ali Mirsepassi and Hamed Yousefi.

Discussants: Arshin Adib-Moghaddam (SOAS) and Hamed Yousefi

Organised by: Centre for Iranian Studies, SOAS

Elections and Growing Tension: Iran and the US

Date: Wednesday, 17 May
Time: 19:00
Location: Frontline Club, 13 Norfolk Place, London W2 1QJ

The election of President Donald Trump has raised tensions between the US and Iran just as an intense power struggle plays out ahead of Iran’s presidential election in May. The upcoming election was expected to decide to what extent Tehran opens up domestically — and to the outside world — after the 2015 nuclear deal ended the country’s isolation.

As the Iranian vote nears, the US senate is poised to pass a bill that will further enable Trump to violate the deal. Iran’s plans to restart its nuclear program if the deal falls apart have been labelled by some as ‘disastrous’ for the Middle East. How will Donald Trump’s plans to kill the nuclear deal affect the upcoming election, and Iran’s already strained relations with the West and its Gulf neighbours?

Ahead of the election we will reflect on Iran under President Rouhani, the future of his involvement in Syria, and where the country’s international relations are headed.
