John Ihlien and I are looking for a new project.

A couple of years ago, we investigated the impact of changing the dihedral schedules on the sailplanes we were building and flying for F3L.  We are thinking of something new, perhaps on the lines of shaped versus slab tail surfaces.

We need ideas.  We also need folks willing to build, fly and document.  The payback should be some fun, plus splitting what ever we get if we publish an article in the AMA magazine.

If you are interested, even if only to spend a lunch hour talking about airplanes, please join us this coming Friday, 16 January, at Jason's near Paseo del Norte and San Pedro (where we get the free ice cream cones!).  We will convene at 1300, and take as long as we have to, to sketch something out.

Yours, Greg

Sounds quite interesting!   From what I have seen in F3L, the pilot is the far-largest determinate in performance.  L/D  and controllability seems good for all of these models.
I'll re-read some of Martin Simon's book to "freshen up".    Would certainly like to join this discussion.

Hi guys, I would be interested, but right now I am knee deep in a 3.6 meter F5J woody design/ build.

Following Greg and John's stab idea though, this may be interesting-

Mark Drela has a stab airfoil(HT21) that is specifically designed for a woody and also a cambered tail airfoil (HT22). Comparing a cambered to a zero lift tail airfoil may be interesting.

Kind regards,

Mike
