And I do literally mean “on the road.”
Our boat sailed into Nurnberg (Nuremberg) yesterday morning. That was as far as it could go. The water level is too low beyond this point. Viking was prepared for just such a situation. The solution was to disembark the boat, board buses, commute 270 km east (autobahn) to an awaiting sister boat on the Danube River. An unexpected benefit to all this was a chance to see more of the countryside than would have been possible from the river. We crossed the Continental Divide along the way. So, the rest of the cruise will be downstream.
The Nurnberg castle was impressive.
1) A tower of the castle. “Look out below”—medieval “facilities” were less than sanitary. Much of their waste contaminated the water supply, which easily spread disease and plague.
2) Bus trip on the autobahn. Road-work-delays on the autobahn stretched travel time by more than 30 minutes.
