ILLEGAL FOREIGN STEEL THREATENS GCW STEELWORKER JOBS; RALLY PLANNED MAY 16

Our plant is one of six designated by the United Steelworkers Union and the Alliance for American Manufacturing, (AAM), for a grass roots campaign to build congressional support urging the Department of Commerce to reverse its earlier ruling on Oil Country Tubular Goods, (OCTG), imports.

On Friday, May 16, 2014 at 3:00 p.m. there will be a major rally in downtown Granite City at Civic Park, 20th Street and Delmar Ave. It is important that members attend this rally and show their support in this critical effort.

The Save Our Steel Jobs Rally will feature federal, state and local elected officials, as well as representatives from the USW, USS and AAM. Speakers will include Congressman William Enyart, Congressman Rodney Davis, Governor Pat Quinn and Mayor Ed Hagnauer.

As members have been previously made aware, in July 2013, U. S. Steel and several other domestic steel manufactures filed a trade case against South Korea and eight other countries based on the alarming surge in Oil Country Tubular Goods products imported into the U.S. market. The case was brought because domestic producers strongly believe the foreign steel is being illegally dumped at below normal value prices, using deceptive tactics to circumvent U.S. and International trade laws.

The final OCTG case ruling in July could potentially be devastating to the domestic steel industry, and particularly, to U. S. Steel’s operations here in Granite City. USS Granite City Works relies heavily on the OCTG product market, as our plant produces steel for manufacturing of pipe used in the oil and gas industry for exploration and distribution.

".........WE CAN'T TAKE A REPEAT OF '08!"

Members and their families are strongly urged to attend this important event on May 16. We cannot sit idle and have a repeat of 2008 when layoffs devastated the steel industry costing thousands of members their jobs. This is our opportunity to make our voice heard and to protect our, and our family’s future. Additional information regarding the Save Our Steel Jobs Rally, #SOSJobs, will be forthcoming. Questions?
