Dear G
Thank
you for contacting me on climate change.
We
have a social responsibility to help the environment, but any energy policy aimed at reducing greenhouse
gases should be carefully considered in the context of our already fragile economy. This is especially
true considering developing nations like China and India aren't taking such drastic measures. If Congress
enacts onerous legislation to reduce our emissions when foreign nations aren't doing the same, we will
create devastating economic consequences for ourselves with no guarantee that these actions will address
any of their goals.
The
worst thing we
could do would
be to enact laws so onerous that the jobs go overseas where they care much less about what comes out
of the smokestacks than we do. That situation would be the ultimate "lose-lose": we lose the jobs, and
the environment gets worse.
We
would be better served with legislation that devotes itself to clean energy development, such as nuclear,
clean-coal, wind, solar, and biomass. If we slam the door on traditional energy, we only do so at a
significant cost to consumers. I will continue to fight against laws that place undue burdens on Missourians.
Again,
thank you for contacting me
