Dear Gary,
The Missouri House of Representatives is considering so-called "Right-to-Work" legislation (House Bills 77, 91, and 95), which was passed by the House Workforce Development Committee on April 3rd.
The
Sierra Club opposes this legislation, which would cripple the ability
of workers to band together to bargain collectively over wages and
working conditions.
Tell your state representative – Vote no on "Right-to-Work".
How does supporting labor unions help the environment? Here are three concrete examples:
- We need each other to win: In January 2013, the Sierra Club worked
along with labor unions to win renewal of the federal Production Tax
Credit, which encourages the development of wind energy in the USA.
2012 was a record year for wind energy installation in our country –we
need to develop more wind energy to transition away from dirty coal.
- We face the same enemies: The American Legislative Exchange Council
(ALEC) produces model legislation for introduction by right-wing
lawmakers across the USA. ALEC wrote this Right-to-Work legislation (HB
77), and also wrote the pro-Keystone Pipeline resolutions (SCR 7 and
HCR 19) which the Club is fighting.
- We share a vision of a country with clean air and clean water:
Pollution does not stop at the factory gate. Workers in the plant and
neighbors in the community are impacted by the same hazardous substances
– we can clean up this pollution by working together. As Benjamin
Franklin said, we will hang together, or we will hang separately.
Take a moment right now and tell your legislator to vote no on HB 77.

which provides more information about our joint work with organized
labor to build the clean energy economy.
For a better Missouri,

John Hickey
