Testing PrivadoVPN delivered robust performance in local connections, but speeds deteriorated as distance increased. Connecting to a UK VPN server nearly mirrored our no-VPN speeds at 96 per cent for downloads, though uploads saw a more noticeable drop to 73 per cent of the baseline.
The transition to a US server resulted in only a slight reduction in download speeds, but upload performance exhibited a more significant decline to less than 20 per cent of the no-VPN level, indicating some limitations for massive data uploads and sharing. Performance degradation was more pronounced when connected to an Australian server, although downloads were still acceptable at 59 per cent of the baseline. Upload speeds were particularly reduced, plummeting to as low as 6 per cent, paired with a latency spike to 295ms, which might affect real-time communication. Overall, IPVanish shows strong local performance, yet it struggles to uphold upload speeds across long distances.
While there are several legal uses for P2P downloads, some countries restrict P2P traffic. To get around these restrictions, VPN providers have created dedicated P2P servers which offer fast downloads and torrenting.
P2P works by distributing file-sharing resources across multiple devices. When you download a file on a P2P network, many different devices send you small parts of the file, without taxing the bandwidth of any individual device. A series of small, quick downloads from different sources allows the file transfer to complete more quickly.
