First Opportunity

Volunteering with NECHAMA - Jewish Response to Disaster

Leadership
One of the unique aspects of NECHAMA’s volunteer model is that we encourage and manage unskilled and inexperienced volunteers who are interested in contributing to the humanitarian response after a natural disaster. NECHAMA provides site leadership, tools, safety equipment, and skilled guidance for each of the different services we provide to disaster survivors.

The services NECHAMA is currently providing to Hurricane Sandy affected communities and households on Long Island include:

Gutting: The process of skillfully removing walls, floors, cabinets and other building materials affected by flood using simple hand tools.
Debris Removal: The removal of furniture, clothing, and other personal and household items from the home or property affected by flood.
Tree Work: Using chain saws to cut fallen trees and remove from the homeowners property. ***NOTE***: Volunteers will not be using chain saws but rather engaged in “swamping”, clearing the cut limbs from the sawyers’ workspace, dragging limbs and tree trunk pieces to the curb for pick up.
Moving Assistance: Helping homeowners pack and relocate their salvaged personal and household items to a storage unit or alternate living space.
Rebuilding: Installing insulation and drywall, painting new walls.

Volunteers who may be unfamiliar with tools or being on a (de)construction site are encouraged to volunteer. All training and safety information is delivered on site by experienced NECHAMA staff members and or volunteer Team Leaders prior to the beginning of the work day. During our Hurricane Sandy Deployment NECHAMA has hosted volunteers between the ages of 13-75, there is something for volunteers of all physical abilities to do!
Hospitality
Another unique aspect of NECHAMA’s volunteer model is the hosting of out-of-town, residential volunteers. Volunteers are provided with housing, meals, and local transportation to and from the work sites. All volunteers are responsible for covering their own travel expenses to get to and from the deployment site. NECHAMA provides basic lodging, meals, and tools in addition to the organized cleanup work in the affected communities.

How It Works
NECHAMA is currently booking volunteers through February 15, 2013. Our teams volunteer 6 days per week from 9am-4:30pm. Saturdays are our day off. Volunteers are encouraged to commit to a full day of volunteering but are welcome to join for any period of time for which they are available. Volunteers can register via the webform on our homepage, www.NECHAMA.org. On the home page click on the “Volunteer” tab on the top of the page. You will be directed to complete a registration form-Be sure to include:

•       Your complete contact information
•       Dates you are available to volunteer
•       If you will be coming with a group or request overnight housing
•       Specify “Staten Island” as your region of interest
Once you submit the volunteer form online, our Volunteer Coordinator will follow up with you shortly thereafter to confirm the details of your volunteer experience. Volunteers will be also contacted the day before their scheduled volunteer day with the address of where to meet the NECHAMA volunteer team.
The suggested packing list for day-trip volunteers is:
·Work or hiking boots or thick soled, sturdy sneakers
·Long pants made of durable material like jeans or cargo pants
·Dress in layers with sweat shirts and long sleeved shirts that can get dirty
·A Bagged lunch, snacks, and water bottle

The suggested packing list for overnight volunteers includes all the above as well as:
·Sleeping bag with sleeping pad or air mattress
·Pillows, linens, and blankets
·Shower stuff including sandals and towel
·Reading materials
·Headlamp or flashlight
·Water bottle
·Sunglasses
·Work gloves and safety glasses if you have them (we have extras)

We hope to hear from you soon!
~Team NECHAMA
