Hi Pete (Smit), Farai & Edward,

The issue of integrating the centre databases/directories with the central Switched On database has cropped up already.

I am designing a schema for the sponsorship system (to go in MySQL) and realised it ought at least to use the same entities and relationships as in the training centres so the data can be sync'd.  This data will be used by the Intalio business process engine to orchestrate the sponsorship system but I'd like to extend the set of business processes in the coming years to manage the operation of the training centres as well.

So... it will pay to have a well-thrashed-through schema.  I have started working on one, but would like to put it in MySQL Workbench when I get a decent net connection (hopefully v soon).  I haven't used Workbench yet, but are you aware of it and do you think it's suitable for defining and thrashing through the schema?

Edward will be here (in India) from Thur and he designed the original database that Pete's modifying.  Would you be up able to make an online Skype meeting to thrash it through?  We can share a desktop via the VPN.  How are you fixed from Thu 3rd - Mon 7th?  India is 3:30 hours ahead of Finland and 5:30 hours ahead of the UK.

Initially the database will be hosted by our web hosting company in the UK - but that's an implementation detail.

Every blessing,

Richard

Workbench is a good app, as long as the schema's are not too big. And
it is still actively in development, so sometimes I got strange
things.

For me Thu-Sat in the mornings would be the best.

About database synchronisation, I think the databases of different
applications we best can keep quite separated. Because synchronisation
will be scheduled (not real-time) there is even the option of using a
merger-database to identify relations between entities in different
databases. Also a problem is that we didn't progress yet with the use-
cases on the SUM side. In my opinion a database must be developed to
match the application and not the other way around. But it is good to
discuss about this and see what connections we need.

Sat morning (1pm Finnish time) we have a Switched On developer meeting.  We could do before this.
Farayi - would you be able to make any of these?

Hey Farayi, amidst the busyness of life, have you had a chance to "wiki" the use cases we came up with at the dev weekend?  We could review these at the same meeting and extend them live on the wiki.

Makes sense - I'll try doc what I can of the Switched On sponsorship system.

Hi Richard,

I believe Peter has completely changed the database that Edward developed based on the UML. I will 'make time' this week to write a sequence of steps as agreed. I finished work late tonight!! I spent time looking through my e-mail for an attachment of the UML and couldn't find it. I forgot the actual hard copy at work!!

It sounds as if you want to create a data mart/data warehouse? Do we need to revisit the UML? Is there a specification of tables that you are creating?

Blessings,

Farayi

p.s. tiling was done by a very good tiler. Mr Ramsden didn't offer any help :-)

Thanks for that!  I think this is what Peter is asking for initially.

It's more that there's a need for the info to be centralised for certain processes around running the sponsorship programme.  It's not for data mining, though I'm sure we'll want to analyse it too.

Bless ya,

Richard

Well I'm glad it turned out well, though I'm a bit disappointed at the lack of teamwork ;-)
