Good Afternoon!
I hope this finds you all enjoying the beautiful Labor Day weekend (and I hope you’re not actually checking email…)!
What a wonderful turnout we had on Monday and we are so grateful for the interest shown and the questions that came. Undoubtedly, you had many answered and many more have popped up!
First off, if you have decided that this is not for your family this year, please email me at hmm...@icloud.com and I will remove your name from further communication. If you are unsure and still would love to try and fit this into your schedule, don’t hesitate to reach out. I have already heard from several of you this week.
You may also reach out to our specific leaders if you have questions, particularly “Which debate style should I choose?” Because we only have 7 club meetings before tournament season, we would love to help you get this figured out sooner rather than later. The debate coaches are Thatcher Debowski (Lincoln-Douglas) at thatcher...@gmail.com and Isabella Peters at isabell...@gmail.com (Team Policy). They can answer any of your specific questions regarding the nuts and bolts of the debate styles and can give a good estimation of time commitment, how to fit into a busy schedule, etc. You may also email Kendra Debowski at kendrad...@gmail.com (LD) or myself for TP (still looking for that mom to hop in there with the TP club!).
If you have specific Speech-related questions, please reach out to either Lynda DePasacreta at ledepa...@comcast.net or myself.
To recap some of the more important details:
1) Speech Club’s first meeting is Monday, September 12 from 1:30-3:30.
2) Apologetics group’s first meeting is Monday, September 12 from 4:00-5:00.
3) Debate Club’s first meeting is Monday, September 19 from 2:30-4:30.
4) Affiliation is required for competition and is $150/family. You may affiliate right up until registration for your first tournament. Despite my encouragement at the kickoff meeting, there is no hurry here—we understand the need to juggle finances sometimes! There are resources you may not be able to access without affiliation, however, so if you are hoping to utilize some of those, you will need to affiliate sooner.
5) Club dues are $50/famliy for Debate, $50/family for Speech with no additional fees for Apologetics or Juniors if you have students in the older group. If you are Juniors only, the dues are $10/family and if you participating in Apologetics only, the dues are $15/family.
6) Parents and students, please take some time in the coming weeks (earlier, preferably) to peruse the NCFCA website (NCFCA.org). There are more helpful resources than you can imagine and you will need to be able to navigate it somewhat when it comes time to register for a tournament (first registration is usually in December). We will reference the website regularly in club and it is where all the rules for competition can be found. Feel free to ask for assistance in this at a club meeting.
7) Parent participation is a requirement unless you have made special arrangements (see Heather). It can be simply assisting with crowd control in Juniors, watching Heather Black’s littles (Juniors Speech teacher), learning alongside your student in Speech and Debate and learning how to coach. This is the best training for judging at tournaments. Parents in Debate Club will be able to assist with judging practice rounds—also excellent training. This has been an amazing discovery for each of us as we’ve discovered gifts we didn’t know we had or were able to dust off gifts that hadn’t been used in a long time!
8) There is a SNOW Club Moms’ Brunch on October 15th at Kendra Debowski’s home. Stay tuned for further details if you didn’t get a flyer. This is such a wonderful way to get connected with other moms outside of club.
9) One thing I neglected to mention at our kickoff is that we are planning to hold judging workshops later in the fall (Nov/Dec). We will be pulling in some experienced parents to give instruction and tips on how to judge.
10) You can expect to receive at least one email between club meetings. If you haven’t received an email from either myself or from one of your leaders by one week after club meeting, please reach out to myself or the leader of the specific club to be sure we have your email address entered correctly. We try not to flood your inboxes by keeping communication streamlined, so please make sure you take the time to read them (ahem, students…).
We are excited to see what unfolds this year. We are privileged to come alongside students and parents as new skills are learned, fears are conquered, friendships and are made and, ultimately, we look forward to how God will be glorified in this wonderful endeavor!
God bless!
~Mrs/Heather Murch for the SNOW Club leaders and coaches
Whoever gives thought to the word will discover good, and blessed is he who trusts in the LORD. The wise of heart is called discerning, and sweetness of speech increases persuasiveness. Good sense is a fountain of life to him who has it, but the instruction of fools is folly. The heart of the wise makes his speech judicious and adds persuasiveness to his lips. Gracious words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the body. Proverbs 16:20-24
