Week 2 & 3 journal check Thur, 8/7: Please bring your journal notes
(including class notes, research notes, and collected essay drafts) to
class for a journal check of both week 2 (7/28—31) and week 3 (8/4—7).

Reminder & tip on week 2 research to be reviewed Thur 8/7: Students'
week 2 research will be reviewed in class Thursday, 8/7. Those who
have not yet posted, please select the source from your essay 2
research that you think will be most interesting to your classmates,
and briefly explain one idea liked, one not liked, one not fully
understood.

Week 3 research (to be reviewed in week 4):

Please work with a partner for this activity designed to assist
students in understanding Shakespeare's text and preparing of essay
3.

1) search online for historical information on Cleopatra or Antony and
prepare notes in the fashion used in weeks 1 and 2:

a) one point you like about the information on the website;

b) one point you don't like about the information on the website;

c) one point you don't completely understand from
the website and would like to research further;

2) check APA style for in-text citation and references page (of many
sites available, one is http://www.dianahacker.com/resdoc/ ); see also
the following site on annotated references (http://
www.library.cornell.edu/olinuris/ref/research/skill28.htm)

3) open the word processor and prepare an APA style reference for the
website followed by your notes from 1a, b, and c above;

4) post your notes on this Google group;

5) present your ideas to the class.

Gascoigne B. History of Cleopatra. Historyworld.
http://www.historyworld.net/wrldhis/PlainTextHistories.asp?historyid=aa25

a. Something which we liked about the article, was the fact that it
included information which the play by Shaw (Caesar and Cleopatra),
never mentioned, such as the fact that Cleopatra had a child with
Caesar.

b. Many of the facts are rough estimates, rather than exact dates or
numbers from historical evidence.

c. Something we didn't fully understand from the article was it's
mention of Cleopatra's assistance of Cassius, one of the assassins of
Caesar. The article did not go into depth about what actually happened
and I would want to research further into this.

Anonymous, 1995-1999, TIGERX.COM, Biography of Cleopatra
http://tigerx.com/history/people/cleopatra.htm

This article is a brief biography of Cleopatra. One point I liked was
that the author claimed that Hollywood has often distorted many of the
facts surrounding Cleopatra and the history behind her. One thing I
disliked was that the weakness of historical evidence. There wasn’t
clear criterion of facts that the author wrote about Cleopatra. One
thing I didn’t understand was how accurate this biography is. The
article said that Cleopatra married with his brother to keep the blood
line pure, even though it was forbidden.

Antony and Cleopatra: A Study Guide.
Plot Summary, by Michael J. Cummings © 2003
(http://www.cummingsstudyguides.net/xAntonyCleo.html)

Lacking a formidable knowledge of Roman history, I find it pleasing
that Mr. Alan Cumming’s “Plot Summary” (of William Shakespeare’s
“Antony and Cleopatra”) implicitly prompts readers to research further
the rich history of Rome.

While Mr. Cummings (2003) makes clear that readers might not possess
sufficient knowledge of the history preceding the story under review,
Mr. Cummings’ too-brief analysis of a rather broad swath of pertinent
details is all but sarcastic. He states, “Shakespeare's play assumes
that the audience is familiar with events that took place before Mark
Antony's affair in Egypt with Cleopatra.” As a student desiring
background that was not provided by public education, I am
disappointed in the implicit expectation that I should possess a
commensurate historical knowledge to that of a privileged scholar.

In closing, I must state that I am intrigued by the poetic meter of
the quotes (from Shakespeare’s play) employed by Mr. Cummings. I
believe that there is a fair amount of symbolism that contributes to
the understanding of how that large stripe of history—a millennium, no
less!—became integral by way of the poetry chosen.

Anoymous. Facts About Cleopatra (2008). Life Style Lounge. h
ttp://lifestyle.iloveindia.com/lounge/facts-about-cleopatra-1297.html

1) What I like about this article is that it refutes a misconception
about Cleopatra's beauty, (even though technically since beauty is
subjective, some would consider her pretty, but she is not
exceptionally beautiful, and that surprised me) and presents its facts
in a clear and logical way.

2) What I do not like is that the article says it will present
"Interesting Facts about Cleopatra," but in fact simply presents facts
found in other biographies in a more interesting way.

3) I did not find anything confusing about this article because the
article explained all its facts clearly; in fact, this article
explained Cleopatra's suicide in a way that was unclear to me in
another article about Cleopatra's life. This article explained the way
that Cleopatra killed herself (with an Egyptian cobra snake).

What I like about this information is that it gives a very brief
history of Antony and Cleopatra since I knew nothing about them.

What I didn't like is it doesn't really tell how their personality
are.

What I didn't understand is why Cleopatra "arranges to have a
poisonous snake delivered to her in a basket of figs." So did she died
by a poisonous snake or did she "kills herself."

1.) I enjoyed learning a little bit more about Cleopatra and that the
fact she and Antony went on to have three children. And that in the
end she ended up taking her own life by commiting suicide.
2.) There wasn't anything on the site that I didn't like. I do wish
there was a bit more information on her.
3.) And another interesting point is the fact that she had a baby with
Caesar and the site claims that's where the birthing term "Caesarian"
section came from. This is something I would like to research more.

a) I like how the website breaks down Shakespeare's method of writing
plays so that we the audience see the various significant differences
from Antony & Cleopatra and much of what has come before.

b) I wish the website would have added details to the interesting
questions it raises such as why Shakespeare omitted facts about
Cleopatra's children.

c) I dont understand why there was not at least a small analysis of
other issues going on in Rome of which these two characters are
primary players.

History

a. We liked how this writer put exact dates in chronological order as
they occurred
and also mentioned details about Cleopatra, such as the age at the
time when Caesar had
first met her.
b. We disliked the part where the writer mentions about Cleopatra
having thoughts about suicidal. With such a great queen image, this
might affect the way the audience thinks about her.
c. The part where we did not understand was the thoughts of suicidal
thoughts by Cleopatra. She practically had everything and was the
Queen of Egypt.
