Subject: [ ICOR ] Muharram 1443 & Aashuraa'

Assalamu Alaikum

Alhamdulillah, we have been blessed to witness the commencement of the new Islamic Year 1443. May Allah make this year better than our last. Amin.

The month of Muharram which is the first month of the Islamic calendar is one of the four sacred months and hosts one of the most auspicious days of the year, i.e. the 10th of Muharram.

The 10th of Muharram is known as the day of Aashura. When Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi wa Sallam came to Madinah, he found the Jews fasting on Aashuraa'. Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi wa Sallam enquired as to the reason for fasting to which they replied, “This is a blessed day. On this day, Allah saved Moosa Alayhis Salaam and drowned the family of Fir’aun. Moosa Alayhis Salaam thereafter fasted on this day in gratitude to Allah.” Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi wa Sallam said, “I am closer to Moosa than you.” He Sallallahu Alayhi wa Sallam then fasted on that day and commanded the Muslims to fast as well. (Bukhari)

Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi wa Sallam in another Hadith stated, “The fast of Aashuraa' wipes out the sins of a year.” (Muslim)

Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi wa Sallam further advised keeping an additional fast a day before or after the 10th to maintain a unique Islamic Identity different from other religions where they fast only on the 10th of Muharram.

The day of Ashuraa' (10th Muharram) falls on August 19th 2021.
