Jewels are items that can be placed into allocated jewel sockets in the passive skill tree, and can be removed or replaced at no cost. They grant certain buffs and abilities. Like most other items, jewels can be modified by orbs and are available in the four rarities. A rare jewel can have only four affixes instead of six.

Abyss jewels are special types of jewels that can be socketed into jewel sockets as well as abyssal socket in items. Cluster jewels can only be socketed in the outermost jewel sockets and adds a passive skill cluster to the passive tree.

Only magic, rare, and unique jewels can be found in loot. Normal jewels can be obtained by using an Orb of ScouringOrb of ScouringStack Size: 30Removes all modifiers from an itemRight click this item then left click on a magic or rare item to apply it.

Cluster jewels can be found in Delirium encounters. Cluster jewels can only be socketed in the jewel sockets located at the outer-most part of the passive skill tree. They add a passive skill cluster to the passive tree when socketed. They have modifiers that determine how many and what skills are in the cluster. Larger cluster jewels can have jewel sockets, which can support smaller cluster jewels or any other types of jewels.

Abyss jewels can be found as drops from an Abyss. They behave mostly like regular jewels, except that they can also be socketed into equipment with abyssal sockets. Abyss jewels frequently have modifiers that are not available on regular jewels.

Jewels are crafted at a jeweler's station by combining a gemstone with a filigree. They are used as activators in the making of trinkets, and also as upgrade components for trinkets of exotic and lower rarity. Corresponding gemstones and jewels (e.g. a Garnet Pebble (gemstone) and an Adorned Garnet Jewel (jewel)) both give a bonus to the same attributes, although the amount of bonus given by the jewel is greater than that from the gemstone.

Unlike gemstones, jewels do not have dedicated storage slots in the material storage section of the account vault (and therefore cannot be deposited remotely), though like all items they can be stored in the general bank area.

Some jewels can only be crafted after learning the recipe by purchasing a recipe sheet from a Master Craftsman for karma or coin. After using the recipe sheet, that jewels will be available in the Production pane of the Crafting Station window.

Jewels has been called the first full-length abstract ballet.[2] It has three related movements: Emeralds, Rubies, and Diamonds (usually separated by intermissions). It can also be seen as three separate ballets, linked by their jewel-colored costumes. Balanchine commented: "The ballet had nothing to do with jewels. The dancers are just dressed like jewels."[3] Each of the three acts features the music of a different composer: Emeralds is set to the music of Gabriel Fauré, Rubies to the music of Igor Stravinsky and Diamonds to music by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky.[4]

Update - June 26, 2007, 1 p.m. - The full "family jewels" report, released today by the Central Intelligence Agency and detailing 25 years of Agency misdeeds, is now available on the Archive's Web site. The 702-page collection was delivered by CIA officers to the Archive at approximately 11:30 this morning -- 15 years after the Archive filed a Freedom of Information request for the documents.

In the meantime, the Archive has posted the original memorandum, signed by then-CIA director James R. Schlesinger, ordering the "family jewels" study and calling on CIA employees to report to him any activities "which might be construed to be outside the legislative charter of this Agency."

CIA director Gen. Michael Hayden announced today that the Agency is declassifying the full 693-page file amassed on CIA's illegal activities by order of then-CIA director James Schlesinger in 1973--the so-called "family jewels." Only a few dozen heavily-censored pages of this file have previously been declassified, although multiple Freedom of Information Act requests have been filed over the years for the documents. Gen. Hayden called the file "a glimpse of a very different time and a very different Agency." The papers are scheduled for public release on Monday, June 25.

Then-CIA director Schlesinger commissioned the "family jewels" compilation with a May 9, 1973 directive after finding out that Watergate burglars E. Howard Hunt and James McCord (both veteran CIA officers) had cooperation from the Agency as they carried out "dirty tricks" for President Nixon. The Schlesinger directive, drafted by deputy director for operations William Colby, commanded senior CIA officials to report immediately on any current or past Agency matters that might fall outside CIA authority. By the end of May, Colby had been named to succeed Schlesinger as DCI, and his loose-leaf notebook of memos totaled 693 pages [see John Prados, Lost Crusader: The Secret Wars of CIA Director William Colby (Oxford University Press, 2003, pp. 259-260.]
