Hey makers! I watched a bit of ROS World 2020 and am trying to get my hands dirty with simulation environments. Does anyone have experience/interest in doing more in this area?

The other day I was thinking about whether a simulation environment for the popcanbot challenge would be useful to anyone, but it looks like Lucas was on it 4 years ago!

I'm wondering which environment(s) would be best to start with? Lucas used Gazebo so maybe I'll get started trying to understand what he did...

I think Gazebo would be a good choice.  As far as I know, Gazebo is the most popular simulation environment for ROS users.

I've been playing around with Gazebo for a few years now, and have given several demos with Gazebo at the monthly meetings.  I have a Gazebo "world" file with an empty Popcan Challenge arena (walls only);  I am hoping to incorporate furniture and refrigerator from external files.  This is basically a refactoring of Lucas' world file, where everything is in one file.

I will be setting up a repository for our robotics code at GitHub in the next several weeks, and the Gazebo simulation files will be part of that.

Remember that for simulation to be meaningful, you need a good URDF model of your robot.  Understanding URDF and how workspaces work would be the best place to start.

Hey Don,

Thanks for the recommendations! Is this the repo I should watch for updates https://github.com/DonZagorski/SnoCoMakers?

I have models (Solidworks) for the entire Pop-Can Challenge arena, so please let me know what you need.

The repo will be under the auspices of Snoco Robo, not an account under my name.  I will post the repo's URL to this group when it's created; there is no need to watch for updates via anywhere else.

Sorry for the delayed rollout; it's coming!
