Hi snippers,

In the last couple of months we noticed a spike in the use of Snipurl
for phishing and spam.

As a result, we now have automation of spam controls beyond just the
user reporting of it (at http://snipr.com/site/reportspam).

Now Snipurl automatically connects to several RBLs such as SpamHaus
and SpamCop to check for snips in real time and if a blacklisted
domain or IP is found, we immediately disable it.

As always, disabled snips are fully flushed from our system in a week.

Happy snipping,
Shashank

Hi.

Thanks, as always for your efforts on this front -- but all my snips
since Friday have disappeared, and I wonder if your automated system
may have "flushed" them prematurely?

I was alerted to the problem early Tuesday morning, and discovered
that all my snips after about midday (Eastern Time) on Fri 4/30 were
simply gone -- for anyone who clicked on them (including me) they were
returning the following error message:
This snipurl has been deleted or is private.

That's when I realized the snips were totally missing from my account.

Thinking I had simply snipped while not logged in, I tried to "claim"
a few of the missing links -- no dice. Same error message.
(Even if they were in need of claiming by me, they should still work
for users -- but they're not.)

So I remade several of the links and reposted them to Twitter -- and
checked them -- they were working at 5aET or 6aET. Now those are
broken and gone as well.

Screenshot of the account page, showing several of my 5/4/2010 snips
-- and the fact that they were successfully clicked:
http://sn.im/vzc42 - A sampling of sn.im #URLshortener links (made
earlier today, ... on Twitpic
(I just tried THAT snip, and it works right now, but in case it, too,
disappears: http://twitpic.com/1kyic9 )

But as of this writing -- 10a ET -- all the links since 4/30,
including the replacement ones made earlier today, are now missing
from my account.

1) Any idea what's going on?
2) Is there a log or backup somewhere of all the snips I made since
4/30?

Thanks in advance...

I have reinstated your snips. Please know that two of your snips were
reported as spam.

My very stringent policy from now on is to disable all snips from a
user even if only one of his snips has been reported.

Anyway, in your case they seem to be decent snips, but please make
sure not even one of them is spam.

Happy snipping,

This is very worrying; I have created snips for a few people, with custom google
maps as their target (because I know how to craft the url), and I have no
control over how these people will use them. Does this mean that if one of those
people includes a snip in a message post that is considered spam, causing a user
to falsely report the snip itself as spam, that ALL the people will find their
snips deleted?

I have 'owned' these snips so that if google ever changes the url syntax, I can
edit the snips appropriately, but perhaps if you insist on this policy, it would
be better to 'disown' them, so that one rogue doesn't scupper all my 'clients'.
Can I do that?

Or do you check that a snip really is spam before deleting snips (I'd feel safe
then, because they clearly aren't)?

Wow - thanks so much for the fast response!
But....**none** of my snips are spam!
What flagged the spam alarm on your end, and what do you need me to do to make sure none of my future snips sets off any red flags?

Andy,

Don't worry. There is some intelligence in the system.

Anyway the snips are not hard-deleted immediately. They are flagged
for deletion and are actually flushed a week later. So in the unlikely
event that your well meaning snips were abused by someone, you would
have seven days to write to me.

Happy snipping,

I just realized the same thing has happened to me. I know of at least
one URL I snipped yesterday (http://sn.im/nnswpmorine) but without
going through many, many e-mail messages, I'm not sure how to find any
others. I did, yesterday, change the count to 0 (zero) on two of them
because I'd inadvertently clicked on them. I always want to start with
a clean slate, so to speak, when I include the snipped URL in my
specific location. I add letter codes to my snipped URLs based on the
location where I will first use them. This is extremely helpful in
showing my boss and others the advantage of using snipurl. For
example, I use TW for a twitter posting and NN for a newsletter that I
write.

Is there any way I can get my recently snipped URLs back? Thanks.

FYI: I did find another that I'd already posted and now doesn't work.
http://sn.im/twipicfieldpeas
Like another person has asked, how do we know where along the way this
was reported as spam? I've used snipurl for more than 5 years, and to
have this type of problem now is unsettling, to say the least.

Thanks for "reinstating" my snipped URLs that weren't there
yesterday. :) Coming on the heels of the protracted battle you had to
reclaim the snip, etc. domains, I'm wondering whether the spam reports
are coming from anyone associated with that...
Anyway, I appreciate your quick response to my problems. If there's
something I need to be doing differently to help guard against spam,
let me know. My hope is that, during the days when my links didn't
work, that they weren't being reported as spam. A double whammy, so to
speak.
