Dear all,

We're in talks with NIC.IM, the registrar of .IM domains to figure out
what we can do to solve this embarrassing issue:

http://groups.google.com/group/snipurl/browse_thread/thread/c1184022e932576f?hl=en

But because several of you are writing with frustration, here's an update.

Firstly, please know that only sn.im domain has issues. Your snips
will work if you use snipr.com, snurl.com, snipurl.com!

So for example, your snipped URL was

http://sn.im/_singapore

Which is not working for the moment, the following will still work!

http://snipr.com/_singapore
http://snurl.com/_singapore
http://snipurl.com/_singapore

We have changed the settings on the site so "sn.im" URLs are not
showing up at all at the moment. It will be snipr.com until we fix
this issue with the sn.im domain.

Secondly, in MANAGE SNIPS, you don't have to change anything. If you
had "sn.im" URLs before, they will automatically now show up as
snipr.com URLs so you can share. The .com domains are much more
professionally managed so there will be no issue with them.

Thirdly, for sn.im URLs you have already shared through newsletters or
through tweets. If you had sn.im URLs on your website, then it's easy
to replace them with snipr.com through a mass search/replace (write to
me for a Perl script or a Wordpress plugin). But in old tweets or
emails already sent out, which are things that you do not manage like
you do your own website, it's an issue that I'm seeking ideas for.
Please bear with us. Hopefully we will have sn.im active again.

Hope this addresses immediate issues. Please use snipr.com for now,
and watch this space. I will send out an update asap.

For people who run their own sites, here's a quick way to en-masse
replace "sn.im" to "snipr.com".

Presuming you are using a Unix based system, in the root www folder
(usually "public_html" on Apache systems) just execute this command--

perl -pi -e 's/sn\.im/snipr.com/gi' *.*

Happy snipping,

Great data.

Sadly, I've embedded my Sn.Im's in MANY places, which need to be
manually edited (i.e. Social Media sites such as Facebook, LinkedIN,
etc.)

I've also had to deal with customers complaint's - and the usual "why
don't you use [FILL IN THE BLANK] shortener instead, yadda, yadda,
yadda'

Sincerely

That you are already working to fix the problem is great to know. An
expedious resolution would be most appreciated.

Also please know that there are other use cases where this snafu is
really hurting. In my case I have produced a ebook that contains sn.im
urls. The ebook has been downloaded thousands of times and it is
impossible for me to go back and update those versions.

Thank you for working on this issue.

Thank you very much for the update -- hope you have some good news for
us very soon.

We too have sn.im URLs scattered all about the web (Twitter, Facebook,
etc.), and I'm cringing at the thought of how many dead links are now
out there. :-(

Can't complain too much, tho, as it's a free service -- and a good one
at that.

Keep up the good work!

I'd also like to say "thanks" for keeping us as up-to-date as possible
on this issue. Is there any "new" news?

We also have thousands of sn.im links spread across the web via
Twitter & Facebook, with no way of fixing them. Hopefully we won't
get hurt too badly with all the 'dead' links, but there's no real way
to tell I suppose.

Anyways -- thanks for all the hard work you do -- we love snipr! :-)

Just to make sure we are all very clear: snipr.com is live and working
as always. Only the "sn.im" domain is down. So this applies to people
who have already shared the sn.im URLs in places that cannot be easily
edited (e.g., a book). Otherwise, you can very easily just use the
snipr.com equivalent of your snipped URL.

To all -- we are waiting to hear from the .IM folks. I am on it like
an eagle but the speed of my response to this list is dependent on the
speed of their response to me! :(

Should have just stuck with the dotcom domains but everyone's wanting
the really really short URLs in the twitter generation.

Hi Mr. Editor,

The major advantage of the SN.IM domain is that it is the shortest domain name on the shorter link market -- 4 characters less than snipr.com and even 1 less than bit.ly. This is important especially on Twitter and this is why, I guess, so many of us used it.

Best regards,

Any news yet?

Our website (for a UK NHS Trust) features numerous sn.im snips and our
users are unable to link to key resources.

We use Pageflakes so is there any way we can overcome this issue?

Hi,

If it is sn.im URLs on your own website, they should be easy to change
to snipr.com.

How do you edit the content through "PageFlakes" - do you have a
content management system? Is your site hosted on Unix or Windows?
Please write to me directly at edi...@snipurl.com with some details.

Thanks,

letter domains, and the registrars provides such shitty service!!

Shashank:

It's been several weeks now - do you have any new information for us
about the status of things w/ NIC.IM ?

I appreciate that this entire situation is as hard on you as it is on
any one of us, and that it's caused you significant stress and hassle
-- but please keep us updated. I've been holding off for as long as I
can, but if the situation isn't resolved soon, I'll have to switch to
another 5-character (XX.XX) #URLshortener. It would kill me to abandon
2 years of links and history,

Thanks again for all your hard work -- all along, in fact -- long
before this recent glitch.

Kitson / J.

The delay is from NIC.IM, which to me seems to be the slowest organization we have worked with.

I could bring this up with ICANN Dispute Resolution (because in this case the fault was clearly not mine; it was NIC.IM's) but that would cost be US$ 1,500 to start with, and further legal expenses. I suppose these unprofessional NIC's rely on these costs as barriers to be the limpid services they are.

I am looking for other small domains already. Most of these two or three letter TLD providers are of the same type. The small (two letter) domains cost hideous amounts of money and the provider behind them is understaffed and unprofessional. I am very open to thoughts.

But please know that I am on top of this on a daily basis. If they respond at the speed of "Isle of Man" then there's very little I can do short of making international calls and chasing them -- which cost money and still amount to nothing as an unprofessional and clueless operator picks up and says that someone will call me back.

As for moving to other services, you've had options since 9 years. All your snips are still working from snipurl.com, snipr.com, snurl.com - and soon to be added - a small 2 letter TLD. This doesn't mean I've given up the good fight for SN.IM, but all of it is costing me a lot of money. Is my audience, including yourself, willing to share?

Happy snipping,

Shashank
