Hi Ajesh,OWZONE is not a good option because it is better to sort paper before it mixes with other waste since it reduces the recyclability of the paper. Also it is painful to sort waste.
Also I didn't get this sentence of yours " concrete sustainable structure for the project with well defined stake holders and responsible people from snet ". Can you explain me what it is?Thanks,SravanOn Mon, Aug 27, 2012 at 4:39 PM, AJESH KUMAR <ajesh...@gmail.com> wrote:There are two suggestions for waste pick up
1. Existing hostel cleaning people ( who currently collect our newspaper for their personal business) can be made to collect wastepapers at a common deposit point, sort and deliver to the recycling people (Pick up be arranged)
2. OWZONE people can be authorized to do the same above. (note: Although ethical we must entrust this job to owzone people, currently they are not doing a very impressive job, except that they make sure that all the waste that earns them an income is picked up. So, option 1 is my preference.)
This link is a crucial part in the waste paper project. So, please make a concrete sustainable structure for the project with well defined stake holders and responsible people from snet.
Finally release a PDF document that explains the whole system as a User Manual or a System Manual.

Hi,These are the idea's for the program.Newspaper collection in Hostel zone:First we have to send smails and put IP's in hostels publicizing about the initiative in hostels. We can collect the paper once a month i.e about 4 hostels to be covered every week. We can ask junta to put papers outside their rooms around 11 am on a weekend. Then we can send some NSS volunteers to collect the newspapers and leave them outside the hostel from where the paper recycling agency will pick up. Or what we can do is ask the housekeeping guys to do the same depending on what is feasible.
Newspaper recycling agencies like SBS paper recycling, Sri Jayalakshmi Enterprises etc pick up waste paper from the Hostels/Departments if there is enough paper( ex 300kg). They also offer good money for the paper. It may some time to negotiate with the dealer and put a operational system in place with the help of insti officials.
If it is possible to measure the weight of papers of each hostel separately in recycling center we can introduce it as a part of Tech-Soc Sustainability challenge. This can be an incentive for junta to particicpate in this program.
Regarding collection of used books and single sided papers collection, that can be done at the end of the semester. Before the end semesters start we can place cardboard boxes for collection of single sided paper and book at the hostel security. Those can be collected later after the end semesters.
Waste paper collection in Academic Zone:
We can follow the above process on a similar lines for the academic zone. We can ask professors/dept people to put the papers outside at certain time of day once a month. The papers can be collect by the housekeeping people when they go about cleaning the place. As regarding one sided paper the same thing can be followed but on a different day. The one side paper will be collected by the NSS people to be made into scrap books.
A prize can be put up for the department with most paper recycled per person.
Also having a weight measuring device with us can be useful for statistics. We can document the results and write a report, showing people how effective it is in terms of numbers generating more publicity for SNET.
NSS are planning to do a single side paper collection drive in September over a week. I spoke to the event organizer. They will do this once a semester. They will send their volunteers to the departments to collect paper personally from the prof's who would be informed before. We can collaborate with them to improve upon this idea.
Some good ideas on this can be found in the attached file.
Regarding the use of waste paper, the best suggestion is that we send it to paper recycling agencies. There is a machine which can make pencils from waste paper. We can also use waste paper for making paper bags.
Thanks,
Sravan Pannala
