Asa Mexican-American woman who loves Disney, I don't often find myself represented in the movies that Disney releases. COCO will soon change that with its Dia de los Muertos theme. I'm really excited to watch a Disney film full of Mexican characters & I'm sure this representation will mean a lot to Mexican children across the country. However, I worry about all the little kids with parents who may only speak Spanish fluently & have limited English skills. As a child I didn't go to the theater very often because my parents wouldn't be able to enjoy it with me. I remember seeing a Mexican film with them because the characters spoke Spanish & there were English subtitles. It was something we could all enjoy as a family & I think that that is something that Disney strives to do, bring families together.

The objectives of the research are to identify the types of translation technique, to evaluate the translation quality and to find out the effect of translation techniques on the translation quality used by Pein Akatsuki and Deni Aurora in Indonesian subtitles of Coco movie. This research applies descriptive qualitative method to assess data with documents and informants as source of data. The result shows that there are 16 types of translation techniques used by Pein Akatsuki and Deni Aurora in translating Indonesian subtitles. For both subtitlers, literal translation and borrowing create high level of accuracy, acceptability, and readability. Modulation and the other techniques are showed in high and medium levels of accurate translation, but they result in high levels of acceptability and readability. Based on the findings, the translation techniques applied by the subtitlers contribute positively to the quality of Indonesian subtitles in terms of accuracy, acceptability, and readability.

But if you have an older child who is learning to read in Spanish, or you want some practice yourself, changing the language settings for your Disney+ profile or using Spanish subtitles can be useful too.

Instead, if you are looking for some ways to introduce them to reading in Spanish, you could try out a Spanish app for kids to find some level-appropriate reading material. This would be a fun and frustration-free option for introducing your child to Spanish vocabulary.

Another family favorite and one of the most popular Disney movies right now, Raya and the Last Dragon is also available in Spanish on Disney+. In this action-packed adventure, Raya teams up with a dragon named Sisu to save the world of Kumandra.

This movie will be shown with open captioning in partnership with Communication Services for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. Captions are visible to everyone in the auditorium and will show along the bottom of the screen in time with the movie, similar to foreign-language film subtitles.

Spanish teachers have been talking about Coco since the first trailer was released years ago. It has replaced The Book of Life as the movie many teachers use. Once it was in theaters the rave reviews started. Now that it is out on DVD and is Academy Award-winning, it is everywhere. Spanish teachers can not wait to use the beautiful stories, themes, images, and music that are a part of this wonderful movie. I watched the movie Friday night for family movie night, and by Sunday I had a Movie Guide for Coco. When I first created it, I had novice Spanish in mind, but then later added questions in Spanish as well.

I bought the DVD from Target and it has options for both English and Spanish audio, as well as English and Spanish subtitles. (Be careful that many digital versions just have English). Here is how I typically used the movie in my Spanish classes. Please do whatever works best for you and your students to meet them where they are at. *Update it is on Disney+ right now as well.
