Ourinstitution uses embedded videos in all our courses, hosted on a 3rd-party service called Vzaar. This was working fine in the Canvas mobile app until one day a few weeks ago, when all our embedded videos stopped showing up in the app, making it more or less useless for our students.
I did some testing and enquired with Canvas Support, and according to them there are NO video platforms that are working in the Canvas mobile app any longer, with the sole exception of YouTube. They said developers are looking into it but can't tell me when/if this might be fixed.
Is anyone else grappling with this problem out there? I can only assume from what they've told me that there must be many more institutions affected, but I haven't seen anything about it here on the Canvas Community.
We were just about to make a major push to let make all our written + image content responsive so it would look good on mobile, but our plans are dead in the water at the moment as none of our video content is visible.
I did some more testing myself and found that public YouTube and Vimeo embeds work, but neither public or private embeds from Vzaar and Wistia appear any longer. Canvas support has done some more testing and told me that the only platform that found that WAS still working was YouTube.
Yeah, this very well could be the case. If you were linking to videos, there may be a problem opening the url in the current App Store version, 3.14.2. 3.15.0 seems to have fixed all the link issues in every case we have tested so far.
My MacBook isn't streaming videos from Canvas well. They are really choppy, and stop a lot, even if I turn off everything and make sure I don't have a lot of windows or a second browser window open. I use Google Chrome. Any suggestions? Youtube and other video streaming sites usually work just fine. MacBook Air 2021, 8 gb, OS Monterey 12.5.1
Since the issue is limited to Canvas, you may want to see if the issue persists while using another web browser? That can help isolate your issue a bit more. However, you may need to reach out to Canvas support directly: Canvas Support
Im kinda using a single note with some headers for temporary embeds just for some relevant stuff right now- and some temporary copies (inside vault), that i will later have to purge - meanwhile im holding on making the canvas i would solely on that

I like to screen record these canvas videos and share them to my instagram, but now that there's a dark overlay I'm forced to use the inhouse "Add to instagram stories" feature - as this is the only current way to remove the dark overlay from the canvas. This wouldn't be a problem, except that the imported video is only 7 seconds long. What if I want to post more than 7 seconds of video to my story? The answer is, I do, and to do so I'd have to export multiple canvases. It's time consuming and bothersome. Whereas I used to be able to just screen record a vibrant visual with perfect aspect ratios for iPhone screens, I now have to go out of my way to achieve what used to take 30 seconds tops.
Not sure why this was necessary/implemented. If anything it's just made me annoyed because now I can't add to my stories in the way I'd like. On top of that the dark overlay just generally brings down the whole point of the canvas feature in my opinion - and I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels this way. Why include a visual for a song if you're just going to make it seem like I'm viewing said video through a pair of shades that I didn't ask to wear? Just let me view the video the way it was intended to be seen...
When i touch the canvas it usually hides the interface and the canvas get brighter. However after the update even though i touch the canvas and the interface disappears the canvas is yet dimmed and does not get brighter.
If that doesn't resolve the issue, we'd like to know more about your device setup. Could you tell us the brand/model and operating system of the affected device together with the Spotify version installed on it?
Recently, I noticed that the Spotify Canvas has been acting somewhat strange. Around April of 2022, when trying to focus on the Canvas video playing in the background, the "shadow" effect seen during normal playback will appear over the Canvas video, when it did not do this before. Picture 1 showcases the focused Canvas video on March 28, 2022, without the "shadow" effect applied. Picture 2 showcases the focused Canvas video on May 17, 2022, with the effect overlapped. Notice the artist name and logo in the left-hand corner in both images, and how it's visible in the first, and hidden in the second. I tried contacting Spotify Support, but they claim this is the feature running as usual. I'm requesting it be reverted to it's original state, as I feel the original provides a better look and provide a better experience for the listener, and the shadow can potentially lower the effect of the Canvas in the app.
In this case, we recommend that you check your battery settings and make sure that Spotify has no restrictions on your phone. Additionally, we suggest that you head to the Home screen, look for Settings and then tap on it. Scroll to, and tap General > touch Background App Refresh. You will see a list of apps that use the service.
I've also done a second clean install (following your instructions), and nothing changed. It's not a "massive" deal, but I am pretty detail oriented and it does throw me off, almost making me not want to listen to it anymore (or switch off the Canvas setting in general, which I would much rather not do).
All this to say is, I'm not trying to be rude. I'm sure it's difficult and frustrating trying to diagnose a problem that I'm sure isn't widespread, but I can see it affecting some users (example: -iPhone-iPad/Why-is-there-a-dark-overlay-on-the-canvas-videos/m-...).
i am having the same issue as everyone and it' sssssuuuuuuuper frustrating. also, thank yo spotify for responding but asking the creators to change our settings isn't useful since if it's an issue in settings, other users won't know that and they will just think the imagery ppl are making is not good. this is a really cool feature that the only way it seems to remedy is to re-edit your mp4s to a brightness that doesn't get completely washed out in canvas. with is super time consuming. spotify, please please fix this!
I'm making this media project and I'm running into a big problem. I essentially wanted a 4x4 grid of 16 videos, but I'm getting lag issues of course. I'm wondering if there is a better way to do this with canvas. Can I composite multiple videos, will that speed it up as opposed to having 16 separate video elements? If you click on this link: hit PLAY ALL (then TEST, later) on the left side, you can see what I mean. It actually works most of the time, but sometimes not. I'm also going to add longer videos.Any advice is appreciated.
This guide includes instructions for backing up videos stored in Stream Classic or ReggieNet itself. It also shows instructors how to import those videos into Canvas Studio for use in the fall of 2023 or beyond.
All your selected files should begin uploading into the Library. You can also add YouTube or Vimeo videos into your Library using the same method by adding a URL on the right area after clicking the Add button (it will embed them there for use; they will not be there as files). These videos will have the YouTube or Vimeo icon to the left of your name to signify they are being hosted on that platform.
This list defaults to the most recently uploaded videos at the top, but can also be searched by file name. This is one reason why being mindful of the names of your files can be important. Your video will be embedded at your cursor.
As a modern web application, Canvas has many ways of of integrating video content into your course. Not only can you record, post, and share videos with your students, but you can also accept video submissions from students and allow them to share videos with each other. This article will discuss the various ways you can use video content in Canvas, and help you to decide which is right for you.
This guide explains how to share videos with your students in the Media Gallery tool in Canvas. This tool allows you to create a collection of videos that students can search and arrange themselves to locate a video.
If you use UD Capture Classroom Capture, your automatic classroom recordings are added to your My Media. If you choose the Automatically publish to this course in Canvas option on the request form, all new UD Capture recordings will also be available to your students in Media Gallery automatically and you can skip the instructions below.
If you use Zoom cloud to record live synchronous sessions, your recordings are added to your My Media automatically (except for users in managed Zoom sub-accounts). You can use the instructions below to share these Zoom recordings with your students easily.
Some instructors may require that you upload a video to post to a discussion board or to submit as an assignment. For these kinds of activities you will use a suite of media tools integrated with UNM Canvas: Kaltura My Media, Kaltura Media Mashups and Kaltura Express Capture (webcam only) and Kaltura Capture Desktop Recorder. Note: Not all courses require video content, so consult the syllabus and if you have questions, be sure to ask your instructor.
Use Express Capture to record short videos with your webcam and microphone directly from your browser without the need to install any software. This is a great alternative for devices that do not support Kaltura Capture or for those wanting to quickly record a short video of themselves.
