The Mentalist is an American drama television series that ran from September 23, 2008, until February 18, 2015, broadcasting 151 episodes over seven seasons, on CBS.[1] Created by Bruno Heller, who was also its executive producer, the show follows former "psychic" Patrick Jane (Simon Baker), who is a consultant to the California Bureau of Investigation (CBI), and his boss, senior agent Teresa Lisbon (Robin Tunney), using the highly developed observational skills he previously employed to "read" people's minds.

His associates at the CBI include colleagues Wayne Rigsby, Grace Van Pelt, and Kimball Cho, and their boss, Teresa Lisbon, with whom Jane shares a combative friendship with romantic undertones that develop in later seasons. Various directors and recurring civilians come across as the show unfolds, including: Bret Stiles, Gale Bertram, Virgil Minneli, Erica Flynn, Lorelei Martin, Kristina Frye, Madeleine Hightower, JJ Laroche and Walter Mashburn.

As the show progresses, the focus shifts from general cases during seasons one to three, to solely catching Red John, throughout seasons four to six. At the midpoint of season six, the Red John case is solved, the FBI steps in, closing the CBI, and the show adopts a new track for two seasons, along with a few new characters. The show still focuses on case solving with emotional episodes.

The show often set episodes based on fictional locales with names such as Salinger Mill and Rancho Rosa. Like the majority of American television shows, The Mentalist was mostly filmed within the studio zone in Los Angeles County, but occasionally filmed a few scenes on location in Sacramento. The structure used to represent the CBI headquarters in Sacramento is the back of the Pico House in downtown Los Angeles. On October 15, 2008, CBS ordered the first season of The Mentalist[4] and the show was subsequently renewed annually from 2010, both in the domestic market and overseas.[5][6][7]

The first season of The Mentalist received mostly positive reviews, with critics being divided on the procedural format, but praising the performance of Simon Baker. On Rotten Tomatoes, season one has an overall rating of 60% from 25 critics, with the consensus saying, "The setup and episodic storytelling is far from original, but The Mentalist distinguishes itself from other procedurals mostly due to the talents of Simon Baker."[17] On Metacritic, season one has a score of 65/100, indicating "generally favorable reviews".[18] Robert Bianco of USA Today felt the pilot episode lacked in originality, but praised Baker, saying, "The Mentalist may be a copy, but it's a well-done copy sparked by an actor who has come into his own as a TV star."[19] Matthew Gilbert of The Boston Globe said, "the CBS show has very little dramatic heft or distinction, but it's wily and brisk enough to engage you for an hour." Gilbert also praised the chemistry between Baker and Tunney, but criticized the crime cases, feeling they were predictable and at times uninteresting.[20] Mary McNamara of The Los Angeles Times praised Baker as "virtually irresistible" and said, "...psychological sleight of hand can't fill an hour every week. For that you need complicated, interesting crimes and complicated, interesting characters solving them. The Mentalist seems prepared to deliver just that."[21]

The pilot episode had an audience of 15.6 million viewers in its first airing, and 7.8 million in a reairing three days later.[22] The December 2, 2008, episode, "Flame Red", was the highest-rated television show of the week, marking the first time a program in its first season had achieved that distinction since Desperate Housewives four years earlier.[23]

The Mentalist is an American crime procedural television series that ran from September 23, 2008, until February 18, 2015, on CBS. The series follows Simon Baker as Patrick Jane, an independent consultant for the California Bureau of Investigation (CBI) based in Sacramento, California and later on for the FBI. He has a remarkable track record for solving serious crimes by using his amazing skills of observation. Jane also makes frequent use of his mentalist abilities and his semi-celebrity past as a psychic medium using paranormal abilities he now admits he feigned. He abandoned his pretense out of remorse when his attention-seeking behavior attracted the attention of a serial killer, Red John, who killed his wife and daughter. With the exception of "Pilot", the first episode, and up through "Red John", the eighth episode of season six, the titles of all episodes refer or allude to "red" (or some shade thereof) as a word, color, or concept. Titles of episodes after this episode refer to different colors (e.g. white, silver, violet, blue, grey, black).

With the exception of the pilot episode and season 2, episode 21, ("18-5-4" = "R-E-D") each Mentalist episode title incorporated various colors. Up to and including the sixth season's "Red John", the titles always included direct or indirect allusions to the color red, including various shades of red or items normally associated with red (e.g. blood, roses, fire). These "red" references served as a reminder of Red John, the mysterious figure responsible for the murder of Patrick Jane's wife and daughter. After the Red John storyline was resolved in "Red John," episode titles would allude to colors outside of red.

The Mentalist has had a total of 7 seasons, each one with its unique set of cases, characters, and plot twists. Some people may have loved the earlier seasons for its focus on the CBI team, while others may have enjoyed the later seasons for the development of Patrick Jane's character.

Personally, I have a soft spot for season 5, it was so intense and full of action. There were so many story lines that were resolved in this season and it was just so good. However, I'm curious to know what other fans of the show think. So, let's hear it! What is your all-time favorite season of The Mentalist? Why do you enjoy it the most? Let's discuss and compare notes!

Started the mentalist today, what's the structure of the show? Does it have filler episodes with the main character and team of experts? or are the episodes connected together and don't take place on different days and times etc

All of the sudden, many episodes are missing and the first two episodes are not what they say they are. When you play them, they are different episodes from different seasons. Half of season 7 episodes are missing. Help!

Same problems. Seasons 6 & 7 are all messed up. This evening we watched season 6 episode 4 and were totally confused because but it was actually a season 7 episode. Lots of episodes missing in 6 & 7 and in the wrong order. Please fix.

The Mentalist tells the story of Patrick Jane, an independent consultant with the California Bureau of Investigation (CBI), who has a remarkable track record for solving serious crimes by using his razor sharp skills of observation. He also makes frequent use of his mentalist abilities to lead witnesses or offenders into offering the actual facts of the case, as known only to them.

In the third season, Jane comes to suspect a mole inside the CBI, who is working for Red John. When a Red John associate is set on fire in his jail cell and a CBI agent is framed as being Red John's mole, Jane devises a plan to lure out the real culprit. In the season finale, the identity of the mole is discovered and Jane comes face-to-face with a man claiming to be Red John. The third season also reveals information about the characters' pasts, including Rigsby's relationship with his father and Jane's attempt to prove his brother-in-law's innocence of a crime.

The final season of the Simon Baker-starring drama will premiere Sunday, Nov. 30, at 9:30 p.m. ET, the network said Tuesday, and will air new episodes in that time slot for five weeks before moving to Wednesdays at 8 p.m. ET beginning Jan. 7.

CBS also announced a return date for "Undercover Boss," which will kick off its new season on Sunday, Dec. 14 at 8 p.m. ET. The show will air on Sunday nights for three weeks before moving to its regular Friday slot on Jan. 2.

While their impending departures from the CBS series was first reported in August, before the sixth season even premiered, Amanda Righetti and Owain Yeoman's final episode as series regulars didn't air until Sunday, March 23.

Righetti and Yeoman, who have been with the show since it began in 2008, play special agents Grace Van Pelt and Wayne Rigsby, the show's fan favorite couple who wed in the season five finale, so viewers have been anxious to see how their story ends.

Well, as season six comes to a close our wishes finally come true. This jaw-dropping season finale starts with Patrick Jane denying the fact that Lisbon is moving to Washington D.C. with her boyfriend to start a new life and a new desk job. For the whole episode Jane seems distracted and refuses to believe that Lisbon would ever leave him. But when Jane finally realizes that he lost his chance to find his happily ever after with her, he tries everything possible to win Lisbon over.

The nation's most popular network is a model of stability in a roiled broadcast industry. It's the only network with more viewers this season than last, yet still lost money because of a depressed advertising market.
