Taking a good starting picture for creating a biometric passport photo is easy. Ideally you have a helping hand for taking the photo, because shoulders and big parts of the upper body are shown on the final photo. Your arms usually are not long enought for this job and sadly a selfie (without a stick) won't work.

If you've got a good image printer, you can download your photo for free and as an experienced user fine-tune or retouch your image, and print it afterwards. If you don't have time for this, try our service. We check if the image is suitable, fine-tune and retouch it for a perfect result and then send you your high quality prints.

Thanks for your fine comments. I can follow your suggestions and seem very logical. I just was asking for a sort of template that can do the trick. I know at least a program that has that feature. I guess that I have to reformulate the question:

Well. This is not a case, but suppose that I have a kiosk taking id photos. Transferring image to Designer seems un-elegant to me. Lightroom has that feature. Not only that one but many other templates, such as printing two 5 x 7 in one 8.5 * 11 sheet. Or to print a whole bunch of wallet-size, etc. For pros this is a common task.

In that very case a macro has more functionality then a simple template as the automatization factor with a macro is higher then with a sole template - basically a well designed macro may include a template and cover at the same time the rest of the task.

A bit late to the game but I needed a template for a UK passport - so I created this Designer/Photo template (attached to post) if it's of any use to anyone... All you need to do is 'Place' and resize your image to fit, duplicate and position, then drop each image into the relevant 'Row X Pos X' slot to mask it.

Not sure if I've missed something, but I was hoping that there was going to be a transparent background and that I would position the grid over a photo, that could be resized to fit within the grid. The turn off the grid and print?

I wonder if someone could tell me how to create the size 45mm H x 35mm W for UK passport photos. Then print them. I need to know for the Windows version and the IPad version. I am pretty much a beginner in Affinity Photo.

Once you have your photo sized correctly within the app (45mm X 35mm) use File > Print. On the Layout section, change the Model to N-Up and then set the Across and Down as required or something similar to the attached screenshot (based on A4 paper).

What I did is paste my photo on top of the example, then change the opacity to 50% so the guide shows through, then use Free Transform to make it the perfect size and alignment to match the example. Then raise the opacity back to 100%.

When taking a passport photo, the photo must be in color against a plain white background. Military uniforms of any kind are prohibited, and the subject must have a neutral expression (no smiling). Before you take the photo, consult Travel.State.Gov's webpage on passport photos for the most up-to-date specifications and requirements.

Make sure someone takes your passport photo for you. Selfies are not accepted. Make use of your tripod if you have one. By using a tripod, you will be able to keep the camera level and steady. Ideally, the person should be around 1 meter away from the camera.

Face a bright window or the door when taking a photo. In this way, shadows can be avoided on the face and in the background. It is essential that the face is evenly lit. Ensure that the face is free of shadows and glares.

Ensure that your face is fully visible. Make sure your hair doesn't cover your face or obscure your eyes. In the case of very long bangs covering your eyebrows, pin them back with bobby pins. Although it's better to show your ears as well, that won't stop your photo from being accepted.

Just like all other official document photos, the US passport photo must follow very particular guidelines. Here are the main and most important requirements to keep in mind when taking a photo for your US passport:

The applicant has to remember that the distance from the top of the head to the bottom of the chin should be between 1 and 1,375 inches (i.e. 25-35 mm). The eye height of the person visible in the photo should also be between 1,125 - 1,375 inches (28-35 mm) from the bottom of the photo (not the bottom of chin).

In the US passport photo, the face has to occupy a certain amount of space. It is stated that the applicant's face (from the top of the head, including the hair, to the bottom of the chin) should occupy between 50% and 69% of the image's height.

Photo dimensions: the digital photo size is measured in pixels instead of inches/centimeters. The photo's pixel dimensions have to be in a square aspect ratio (i.e. the height needs to equal the width).

The photo size has to be between 600x600 pixels and 1200x1200 pixels, meaning that a photo that is higher than 1200px in width/height will be rejected. The same applies if the photo's width/height is less than 600px.

Photo file size and compression: moreover, the US passport photo format cannot be bigger than 240kB (kilobytes), and it means that the image may need to be compressed to meet the maximum file size requirement. The compression ratio should be less than or equal to 20:1.

The best option is to take your passport photos for your American passport in daylight instead of after dark using flash. This helps avoid the red-eye effect and makes the skin look natural. Both sides of your face have to be equally lighted. It means that there cannot be any shadows on the face. Make sure the lighting is not over-or underexposed. Your face must be clearly visible. Moreover, pay attention to the reflections - there cannot be any on your face. The photo has to be sharp with sufficient contrast and detail.

Submit a high-resolution photo that is not blurry, grainy, or pixelated. The submission requirements state that the passport-style photo needs to be printed on matte or glossy photo quality paper. You cannot submit a damaged photo (e.g., with holes, creases, or smudges). Do not digitally beautify the picture; you can use the passport photo converters and cropping tools instead.

You cannot wear a uniform or clothing that resembles a uniform or camouflage attire. It is officially stated that you should wear the clothes you wear on a daily basis. It cannot confuse any of the authorities that may be checking your documents. Still, there is no specific passport photo dress code. We encourage you to try a smart-casual style instead of just a hoodie or a t-shirt. Passport is a document that you will keep for quite a while, so make sure you look good in the photo.

Third, if you decide on a digital version of the photo, find the closest photo-copying point or pharmacy with a photo printing service where you can print it out as a 4x6 inch photo (postcard-size photo). On such a US biometric photo template, you will find 2 (two) passport photos ready to be cut out and submitted to the US passport office!

The US passport photo is a biometric photo which means the image should enable the authorities easy recognition of the passport holder. Most of the requirements are standard biometric photo requirements. The key difference between passport photos around the world consists usually in size and background of the photo.

When taking your US passport photo, you must remember to stick to certain rules regarding posture, lighting, positioning of the camera, and maintaining the correct facial expression, among other things. Here is a list of what you should keep in mind to get a perfect photo for your passport:
