Just wondering if I'd really notice the difference in the above with a 2017 vs 2019 iMac?

Would the older i5 be ok and reasonably future proof for macOS upgrades in years to come?!

Finding the latest product comparisons tricky in determining value for money, whilst buying a 2 year old chipset seems a little risky too!

Depends on the kind of work you do, if you’re editing video for example, you want the most powerful computer you can afford to buy.
For office stuff, anything will do.
IMO

Cheers

It’s office stuff and kids homework and in time perhaps that’ll include garage band etc.

Return deal is good from Apple but feels odd buying a 2017 machine in 2019 and potentially nearer to obsolescence for supported OS upgrades?!

The underlying chip architecture is pretty similar. The main reason Apple removed support for certain macs was the transition to 64bit so I wouldn’t worry too much about the difference between a t2017 and a 2019 mac.

Thanks Sam and Derek.

So Sam, despite reviews saying “don’t buy 2017 iMac or 2019 base model as such dated chips” you wouldn’t worry?

I’m asking as there’s iMac with SSD refurb models from 2017 for a ‘reasonable’ price on Apple.com. It’s whether I should buy that or wait a month or two for 2019 refurb models?

I guess much depends on whether 8th gen really is much better than 7th?

I’m totally befuddled in trying to compare!

in terms of performance you won’t notice the difference unless you’re doing heavy graphics intensive work. In terms of future usability, you’ll easily get 5-10 years out of it. If it runs Mojave then the graphics card is Metal-compatible, they’ve only just ported over to Metal so they won’t be changing anytime soon.
