Hi everyone,

I've had enough issues with Big Sur recently that I'd like to reinstall
it. There was a time when you could download an updater and run it. Now
all the advice I see assumes you want to zero your current install
rather than fix it. Before I complicate my life any further, is there a
way to reinstall over an existing installation?

(too many weird problems like the sound one I mentioned recently are
going on, something isn't right. I haven't had to restart so often since
OS 9...)

Cheers,

Jason

I feel embarrassed now, it's obviously still possible and straightforward. I must have been reading the wrong websites! Thanks.

Jason

Not so sure about obvious or straightforward. I doubt many with Big Sur are aware about Recovery OS and what to do!

True (though I had problems getting ALT to work with my keyboard for
years so I welcome our new 'reach into the cupboard for the back of the
mac mini power button' overlords) but somehow I got the idea you
couldn't just put the OS back over the disk with settings left intact
etc. I call that straightforward;)

You can open the App Store and search for big sur, then download it from there, if you’re having issues getting into recovery mode

ever simpler, thanks.

I'm running a three-day conference from tomorrow and keep losing all sound devices with no warning. Wish me luck getting it sorted!

hmm, spoke too soon. It was cheerfully saying '24 minutes left' then suddenly it just says my mac is up to date and no sign of the installer. Is it hiding somewhere or did it delete itself?

Cheers,
Jason

Did it redirect to system preferences > software update > then ask you if you want to download macOS 11.4?

Yes, it did all that, said it was downloading then disappeared. I tried again and this time it launched the installer so touch wood it all worked. (Should have updated you, rather crazy day). But when I did 'reveal app' (command click in Raycast) it opened Applications - but didn't show the installer so perhaps it's invisible.

cheers,
Jason
