Hi everyone

Hope you're all well. Two sleeps to go ;)

In the New Year, I'll be advising my parents on a new Mac. Their 13yr old iMac is now not enough with online security etc etc.

They're in their mid 80s, and only use email and safari, but prefer a Mac to an iPad for familiarity.

I'm tempted to suggest a refurb Air, but aware the M1 is the new era, can we expect future macOS updates etc to be Intel compatible for a good few years yet, do you think? If not, I'll suggest they get an M1 and be totally future proof!

Thanks so much and hope you all manage a Happy Christmas after this strange year.

I’d say as great as the current generation intel macs are, it doesn’t make sense to invest in a technological cul de sac. I’m sure further updates will support intel Macs for at least 5 years, maybe 10, but Apple have a habit of abandoning old technology in favour of new.

I think they said August for the new iMacs didn’t they?

Thanks. Very helpful. They'll struggle to wait until August, so perhaps a new M1 MBAir is the order of the day. That, or an iPad Air and I persuade them to migrate their Finder setup (it's not much and not complicated) to iCloud Drive and Files (I think that's their best bet but possibly one change too many).

Thanks again and Happy Christmas everyone - which I don't say lightly at this point in this year of all years. We broadcast our carols service online, for any who might like some seasonal Christmas cheer - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=foQFFjDUg6c

Cheerio and glad Father Christmas seems covid immune and not needing to socially distance (or that's what I keep assuring my lot anyway!)

I suggest you look for a recent iMac there is no need for a brand new machine. If I was in the market to replace my 10 year ld mac running Big Sur I would be looking at the adverts from the used Mac vendors. eg Mac Create or their fellow brands.
