Hello,

I have a question regarding the use of Apple TVs in a factory. We are looking at putting 8 Apple TVs on our production floor which is a total size of 5000 square feet on 1 story. The Apple TVs will be used to mirror the display of iPad Mini 2. The company quoting us tells us we should have each Apple TV connected to an Airport express and all the Airport Expresses connected to an Airport Extreme. The Airport extreme would then be connected to our DreyTek router. I would like to know if all this equipment is truly needed or can we get away with connecting all the Apple TVs into an ethernet switch connected directly to the Dreytek router.

All opinions welcome.

Regards,

Benjamin Phillips

Is the company perhaps quoting for all the equipment? Sounds like they’re rinsing you for profit. There’s no need for Airport Express base stations and certainly would actually decrease the performance if they were then connected wirelessly to an Airport Extreme, then to the Draytek.

Apple TVs have an ethernet port on the back and work best when plugged into a wired network (higher bandwidth). They’ll all then become available on your logical network (wired & wireless) to be used as AirPlay screens.

Hi Sam,

Yes the company is quoting for all the equipment with exception to the monitors. So this is iPads, cases and airplay equipment.

From what I understand they were wanting to connect the airport express and apple tv together using an ethernet cable and then possibly connect all the express base stations to an extreme base station using ethernet cables. There would then be another cable running from the extreme station to the router.

I was being told by connecting the devices this way there would be a better connection because they would in a sense be on a separate network.

Ok, I am no expert but that sounds a bit dubious to me.  What's the point of putting in extra steps if the network is basically going to be wired anyway?

Try a quote from another company?

That could easily be accompanied with a basic, generic ethernet cable router, if being on a separate network was essential (stops anyone taking over the display with an iPhone if they're on the same network) but there's no need for airport base stations at all.

Thanks Sam and Russell.

The company quoting is an authorised Apple retailer with experience setting these up in schools.

I thought it was over the top but wanted an extra opinion before advising my colleagues.

Many thanks for your input.

If I understood you correctly, all you need is:

* 8 Apple TVs
* One ethernet switch to accommodate at least 8 Apple TVs
* One router

Thanks,

Jack

Thanks Jack,

After todays SMUG discussions I believe this is what I need.

Rather than:
* 8 Apple TVs
* 1 Ethernet Switch
* 1 Router
* 8 Airport Extremes
* 1 Airport Express

Thanks for everyones advice.

Regards,

Benjamin Phillips

the only thing I can imagine you gaining is better coverage for the iPad(s) to send their information to the router(s) to display via the Apple TVs. ARe the iPads moving around? What shape is your 5000 feet? Do they need to go in specific locations (eg round the edges)? Is this for one image to show simultaneously in a large area or for a variety of small workstations?

PS I know it can be laziness not to edit replies but in this kind of case, not trimming the previous messages is a lot more useful to people trying to follow a complex scenario, rather than making us go hunt for details;)

One thought though, if the iPads are to be located next to the TVs, they’ll need either a wifi router (airport express) or an HDMI A/V cable to plug directly into the TV (no need for an AppleTV then)

Hi Jason and Sam,

Thank you for your input.

The iPads will be carried around the unit while using the internet but not while connected to an Apple TV. When connected they will be in a stationary position near the monitor (and Apple TV).

The unit is rectangular shape divided mainly by machinery. There are walls for the office to one side of the building where the router is kept but this should have little affect on wifi signal. The iPads and Apple TVs will be used in an open space within the building.

The iPad will mirror a combination of webpages and PDF documents. At this time we have no plan to mirror video or similar fast moving graphics so hope the connection should be good. We plan to only mirror each iPad display to one Apple TV at a time. Each Apple TV will be on a different production line against a flat wall.

We have looked at the idea of a HDMI cable but we like the idea of wireless streaming. There is also the issue of finding one which works with a protective case on the iPad. We were looking at the Griffin Survivor.

Many thanks,

Benjamin Phillips

You would likely need to make sure your wifi network stretches the entire length of the factory. Perhaps a couple of meraki base stations would do well, they're centrally managed via the meraki website so very easy to control. You certainly wouldn't need a base station for each AppleTV though.

Open Mesh base stations are also nice and easy to use, don't require direct connection to the network (hence mesh), handle a large number of clients and offer options such as external antennas, Ethernet ports and public and private SSID. Like Meraki they are also cloud managed via Cloudtrax.com and there is an iPad app as well.
