Hi Folks,
Would any of you kind souls be able to help me ? i have a macbook circa 2006 (black one) and i am running it on OSX 10.6.8 which is snow leopard. I recently had an update to do, a security one. After i updated, i can't use Mail ?? every time i open Mail i get " you cant use this version of mail with this version of mac os x "??
I am all for progress but if apple are now forcing me to update to another version of os x then i dont think my machine is really up for it, which means i may have to upgrade my machine to a new shiney one! Not altogether a bad thing but not sure i can afford it.
After the lastest ipad update maps debacle and the iphone 5 release i am slowly falling out of love with all things Apple. Dare i say it microsoft seem 'alright !! Apple seem to be getting more 'big brother' by the month. Or is this just me stressing over my Mail?
Any advice would be much appreciated.
By the way, I have tried to reload Mail from my snow leopard cd, and i have done my permissions. still no luck.

Many thanks

p.s. sorry for the mini rant, but do feel better that i have shared it !

Hi Dean

If you reloaded Mail from the Snow Leopard CD, chances are you're running an older version. Try the following :

  1. Holding CMD while clicking on Mail in the dock will show you where Mail is running from, it should be in the Applications folder at the top level of Macintosh HD. If it's running from anywhere else, put Mail in the trash, then go to Macintosh HD > Applications > Open Mail from there
  2. If Mail is missing, download & reinstall the 10.6.8 combo updater from Apple and it'll reinstall Mail
  3. Once Mail is in the Applications folder, click it once then push CMD + i on the keyboard, it'll show you the version number, what version are you running?

Hi Sam,Thanks for your help, sorry for the delay ive been away from the computer.

I tried reloading mail off the cd no change. then i deleted mail from the applications folder and reinstalled mail, no change. then i updated with the 10.6.8 combo updater, still with no change.
the message i get when starting mail is :-

"You cant use this version of Mail with this version of mac os x.
You have mail version 4.5 (1084/1085). It cant be used on mac os x version 10.6.8 (build 10k549)."

right clicking on mail in applications shows version 4.5.

i have a screen shot if this helps.

I just dont understand why this is happening, it makes no sense. I have even thought about using time machine to go back to august to see if that helps, but then i wont be able to do any future updates?

Any ideas much appreciated.

Thanks

Dean
