Morning Smuggers, back-up solution suggestions.

About to become a “mixed economy” IT household. Mostly apple products, all but one of which back up to iCloud.

But my wife has a new MacBook Pro and my daughter is about to have a new MS surface for school. Both use a variety of cloud services for file storage of one sort or another. I am thinking more about making sure that we also have a “disk image” for them.

For those two, what’s the easiest/most convenient way to back them (the devices) up? I don’t mind if cloud or on site but both need to be automatic.

External hdd plus time machine the obvious easy solution for MacBook but what about the surface? Long time since I’ve had to admin a windows product at home.

Thanks

Russell

I’d recommend BackBlaze as it works on all those platforms. Even if you have TM and external HDD the backups are still onsite and therefore vulnerable.

It’s free to trial. This signup link will give you (and me) a free month if you use it to sign up.

I can recommend BackBlaze too. I’ve been using it for year and been very impressed. Technical support is very good too. I needed to use it in anger once, and it all worked faultlessly.

Me too - I have been a BackBlaze user for about 5 years. I have not had any catastrophes in that time so not had reason to call on it in a big way. I have on occasion though needed a file that is resident on my home Mac whilst I am away and the download process through the browser is very easy and efficient.

I would watch what it does to the battery and data on a Surface. It tends to work quietly in the background and therefore could eat up both of out and about. Also I believe you need a separate account per computer. A scheduled back up (eg at 3 am) to a machine with a hard drive attached would mean you can store both on one account (the machine with the drive).

Cheers,

-Jason
