1Password or iCloud Keychain?

Hi all

I've been with 1Password since v3. I now need to consider upgrading to the paid v7, as the latest Safari and macOS updates have broken v6 and it's no longer supported.

It's a great app, but I'm not a fan of the subscription model (even though, if you really beg, the developer lets you pay a one time purchase fee like the old days).

In short, it's a powerful app with lots of features, but I only use it for passwords and storing banking data and memorable info. I've slowly been migrating to iCloud Keychain, but 1Password shines with quickly looking up info such as banking pins and credit card details.

Anybody doing that helpfully with iCloud Keychain?

I'm keen to support developers, but not keen in principle on subs model, nor the £36pa it'd cost going forward.

Any tips?

Thanks

Adam

I understand there is a link to still purchase 1Password and avoid the subscription, you’ll have to hunt around for it or ask them.

I couldn’t find it. Went with Bitwarden instead.

I was on the fence on this for a long time. But iCloud Keychain isn’t quite as robust or easy to use as 1Password. Which would be why Apple use 1Password internally.

I have moved to 1Password 7 and felt it was worth it. I also have got over my grump on subscription model software - I’d now much rather have viable regularly updated stuff than paying for point updates on a completely unpredictable basis.

So, Jason, would you (and everyone else) now recommend the paid version of 1 Password to someone like me who has nothing in the way of a password keeper?

Absolutely I would. It is best practice guidance from National Cyber Security Centre and just very convenient.

I’ve used it for ages and I keep everything on it ie passport no’s, NI and NHS no’s etc as well as passwords. I don’t resent the annual payment because it is so useful. Also they answer emails if you are stuck.

I had used 1Password for years, but have gone to Bitwarden, which I find v.good with their premium service only $10 per year and that it syncs with my Samsung phone

Thank you very much, everyone, for answering my question about 1 Password. I am persuaded!

Yes, thanks everyone. Seems nobody is really using Keychain as a valid alternative - useful, but definitely not the UI of 1Password which I've always found so easy and intuitive.

I'll have a think and also look at Bitwarden - and possibly look at 1Ps one time purchase and the subscription options... thanks again.

Interesting to hear all this discussion.

I’ve used 1P for years and years and think it’s really impresssive, but I’m reluctant to buy the latest when Apple seem to be continually improving keychain and it’s totally integrated into all my devices for free.

I keep more than just logins and passwords there but as you say Sam, there are always locked notes as well for those other items.

More thinking required I can tell!

I’m a very long time 1 password user, but haven’t moved to the subscription model. Years ago before iCloud Keychain was a thing it’s biggest draw was to sync your passwords across multiple computers and iPhone, also a big plus was was windows compatibility.

As others have already said the polish and quality are good and worth money but it is definitely worth keeping an eye on the competition! Keeps the 1Password team on their toes...

If I were coming fresh to the password management party then iCloud Keychain is indeed very compelling and free, also don’t forget that browsers also have their own good password managers built in now which sync across devices.

The reasons to pay for a password manager are shrinking as the available good free alternatives are very good now. much less a subscription model

Thanks everyone. Really helpful.

And I've just seen that Keychain (on macOS at least) lets you control the password generator too, which is helpful for some tiems.

I think I'll take the free trial from 1Password, giving me time to get data on to Keychain and Notes (locked Notes is a great feature, thanks!)

1P is really great, and their customer support is great, but the email I had explaining to me why subscription model was so much better and by the far the best way to go, was rather irritating. They suggested they work to a  4yr lifecycle of each version release, with no backdated support when new release launches. Even if one updates every 4 years at full price, that's still 50% cheaper than monthly subscription. Great for 'power' users or managing a team of users perhaps, but for just me, Keychain and Notes looks a good compromise.

More reasons to stay in the Apple walled garden - but I admit I rather like it there ;)
