Is it OK to go ahead with upgrading to Monterey?

A bit of an open question without knowing what you’re running it on but I’ve been running it since release on my M1 iMac and all going well with no problems. Maybe different on other Macs, I don’t know.

If you’re on Mojave and have 32bit apps running, like office 2011, you’ll need to upgrade to the latest version of that app to run under anything after macOS Catalina.

Monterey’s on 12.3 now so they’ve fixed most of the problems, I’d say make sure you have a time machine backup just in case you want to revert, but it’s likely to be fine to upgrade.

Sam and Stephen, thank you for being willing to help me.

I am on Big Sur, and I don’t think I have any 32bit apps running (certainly not Office 2011).

Best regards,

Gilly

Hi Gilly,

Catalina, the macOS version prior to Big Sur, dropped support for 32-bit apps so you’ve already crossed that bridge! 😃

The jump from Big Sur to Monterey should not cause any issues for you as I think there is no difference in hardware requirements between them. Sam may know differently of course …

Exactly right, if you’re on Big Sur you might not even notice the difference on Monterey. A really useful feature for me though has been system-wide OCR on images, I can finally select the teamviewer IDs and passwords for which people send me photos of their computer screen then copy & paste them.

Hi smug,

The only other thing I’d check is how much RAM you have as each OS needs more. I wouldn’t want to run it with less than 8 gigs (but I leave a lot of things running!)

Thanks,

Thanks Jason. I have just gone into “About this Mac - Storage” and this is what I received: 810.12 GB available of 1.02 TB. I am not at all techie, but I guess I am OK to upgrade.

You’ve got more available space that I had to start with! 😂 I’m sure you will be fine. I expect you have at least 8GB RAM (memory).

Do you find the Mac to be very slow? The new APFS disk format, which was applied to spinning disk drives and fusion drives (a spinning disk and solid state drive joined together) from macOS Mojave onwards, is extremely slow on anything other than just solid state storage.

There’s likely scope in your iMac to upgrade the internal spinning disk drive to a solid state and it’ll be like a new Mac.
