diacrtics in monteroy?

A while ago, holding down 'e' on a Mac gave you eeeeeeeeeee...

Then it switched to the iOS behaviour of showing a menu with various diacritics (accents and so on).

Now it's back to eeeeeeeeeee

Does anyone know if we can go back to the 'old new' behaviour, showing diacritics? (Yes, they can be accessed via Keyboard Viewer or combinations of holding keys down in sequence, but can we restore the diacritics as default?)

Google has NOTHING on this that I can find!
