My 2017 Intel MBA has been suffering from this problem for sometime now and it’s getting annoying. Often soon after waking from sleep everything freezes and then eventually screen goes black with message saying press any key to restart. Report talks of kernel panic.
I took it to an Apple Genius Bar this morning. Interestingly the genius said he has an M1 Mac Mini with the same problem and the same kernel panics.
I think Jason mentioned this restarting problem a few months ago.
So the problem could be that Big Sur is trying to get too clever by half with secure areas (?) etc.
I thought I would just share in case anyone was interested or has a relevant comment.

FYI <https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1834117/>, I have no idea
whether keepsyms can be as effective with Big Sur as it was with systems
a few years ago.

Thanks for your reply Graham. I see the thread is per-Big Sur which has certainly introduced new problems (and probably solved many others).
I don’t think I’m confident enough to open Terminal.
Apple are going to have the laptop for a few hours next week to run a few tests.
Fingers crossed Monterey will not cause these sort of problems.

Nick,

I’ve been having the same problem on Big-Sur using my 2019 Mac Mini. Really annoying. Seems to restart ‘cos it detects nothing happening (frozen), only happened twice while I was actually using it. Often occurs in middle of the night. Since the last Mac OS update (11.5.2), it seems to have settled down a bit.

I’m bang up to date on our M1 Mac mini and haven’t experienced anything like this. I did have some problems with the initial version of Big Sur but that was running from an external SSD via Thunderbolt. Since running on the internal storage it has been stable.

Personally I’d reinstall Big Sur which with APFS is straightforward. If the problem persists then there is some other factor at work.

Thanks Paul. I’m on 11.5.2 and yesterday it restarted twice in an hour so that update doesn’t seem to have done it for me.

The genius yesterday was hinting at a clean reinstall next week when I take it in for testing. Wasn’t aware of the APFS being easier. Thanks. Nick

I'm running Big Sur on my 2020 iMac and it will simply not install the latest update and I keep trying.

I've tried a Cmd P + R restart without any success. It did at first download and then failed to install, now it won't even start downloading.

Any advice?

Can you share the .panic file?

With or without symbols, the content might help to identify a cause.

Thanks Graham. This is the top of the report (the one that Apple asks if one would like to forward to Apple). I have other screenshots (about 5 which I think cover full report).
When the genius at the Apple store had a quick look he said it was (well the top few lines) were the same as his M1 Mac Mini was producing when it involuntarily restarted and didn’t read any more.

That looks storage related, references to NVMe. Have you run disk first aid on the internal storage?

There could be an issue with the storage itself, or the storage controller maybe. If it’s hardware then apple will likely will need to repair or replace.

Hi Sam,
I replaced the 128GB SSD with a 256GB from Flexx last October myself. I’ve just run disk utility first aid on all the things in the left hand column all all ‘appear to be OK’.
I have wondered whether putting in the SSD myself may be part of the problem. Guess Apple will find out next week.
Genius who is also suffering from same error message though makes me think maybe I’m not to blame……..well hopefully.

IONVMeFamily unfortunately
<https://opensource.apple.com/release/macos-115.html> not open sourced
by Apple for 11.5, as far as I can tell, so we can't tell what's at line
5499 of file IONVMeController.cpp

Google finds things such as:

The third-party SSD incompatibility causes the computer to restart
frequently cpp:5499
<https://www.fatalerrors.org/a/0Np91z8.html>

Nick: whether that's relevant to your case, I can't guess.

I’ve installed hundreds of Transcend JetDrive 820 NVMe flash upgrades and never had an issue with Macs restarting unexpectedly like that. Perhaps Flexx isn’t 100% compatible? Or your upgraded drive could have hardware issues?

I’ve seen the M1 MacMini restart issue once so far, that Mac was replaced by Apple straight away and has been fine since.

Thanks Graham & Sam,
No restarts for 24 hours or more…..every finger crossed. I will wait to see what Apple say next week. If there an SSD problem I’m sure they will find it (they want to keep it for 5 hours).
It may be time to move to an M1 MBA anyway. I see they’re in the refurbished store now.

I thought for anyone who read this thread, I took my 2017 MBA into an Apple Store last week. They had it for 5 hours running hardware tests. All fine so their presumption is that it’s a software issue so I’m going to try a clean reinstall.
Actually the MBA hasn’t restarted at all since I booked it in to the A.Store over 2 weeks ago. Mystery.
