Office For Mac no longer working

Hi Smuggers,

I finally moved from my old iMac to a new MacBook Pro, everything is working except for the Microsoft office suite, I van access and open my files but am unable to make changes, the file headers ask me to activate, which sends me to an Office 365 subscription page.

Any idea how I get Office For Mac running properly again?

* I have been on the Microsoft support pages but yjey appear to take one round in circles.

Try this installer : https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/how-to-remove-office-license-files-on-a-mac-b032c0f6-a431-4dad-83a9-6b727c03b193

It’ll remove the installed office license so you can re-activate

No need to worry, download the installer on that page & run then open any Office app and it should ask to re-activate

Hi Sam,

Tried that and I’m afraid it made no difference.

I got a password reset code from Microsoft, reset the password logged in and it took me to an Office 365 page that says no subscription found (I did once go to the web version of Office 365 but never took out a subscription.)

I clicked on “Use Another Account” and it asks me to activate Office 365, (Not what I want or need.)

It does not seem to be able to find / Recognise the fact that I own "Office For Mac, Student Edition” 

I purchased this in 2004 from the Apple store, and while I no longer have the installation disk, (I doubt it would run on a modern Mac anyway.) I do have the CD case with the Product Activation Key.

If I click on one of my Word Docs, I can see the software version number and the comment that it is “Not Activated” see screenshot 3.

Is there a way to get to a page that will let me re-enter the Product key?

Ah, in that case, you don’t have a valid Office license I’m afraid. The product key would be for Office For Mac, 2004 Student Edition, so wouldn’t be valid for Office365 or any other version of office.

You can sign up for a Microsoft account which gives you access to the browser-based versions of Word/Excel for free, or you can take out a personal subscription for £59 per year for one device, £79 per year for up to 5 devices

how did you install Office 16.16 on your previous Mac? That would suggest you had a license from somewhere

Yeah, I get that, but what I don’t understand is how come I have been able to run Office on my iMac for 18 years, but it is not recognised on my new machine?

To be honest, I do not recall, I THINK I just kept updating the paid for version as and when.

Looks like I may have to start over and spend a couple of quid.

The licence for 2004 would only ever work with 2004, it wouldn’t activate 2008, 2011, 2016 or 2019, so I think most likely you’ve acquired a copy of office from somewhere, it’s a puzzle!
